Snorkel for my v8

Hi i need to make a snorkel for my j plate 3.5 v8 has anyone done this and have any pics, refuse to pay nearly £200 for plastic, any help greatly apreciated

Not sure if airbox is in same place, but sure you can use flexi pipe.

this is mine, drainpipe.

Cheers for the pics, would it be poss for you to put some pics on of under the bonnett pretty please.

As you look under the bonet from the front the airbox is on the right hand side and stops just short of the headlight with a flange at the end cheers.

the Air box on mine (200 tdi) come out thru the inner wing, must be the same on yours? maybe just further down towards the headlight, but theres enough room behind the wing to fit drainpipe, no problems.

Cheers for the pic, on mine the intake for the airbox face the front of the car so need to do 180 degree bend then a 90 bend thro the wing then a 90 the other way on the outside wing then up!! Anyone near Brighton that can lend a hand PLEASE.

The 200TDi airbox or V8 airbox can be modified thus

The later 300 series airbox (plastic) takes a little more ingenuity, that's why the Safari Snorkel is £200

The only issue is that generally speaking ordinary drain pipe is not a big enough internal diameter to allow the correct air flow your 3.5 V8 needs over the distance of the snorkel.

IIRC you need at lease 3" ID pipe and drainpipe is 21/2" ID.

When I did one for my Range I went to a specialist building suppliers and bought some Hospital sanitary pipe which was about the right size.

I think your best bet is to bite the bullet and buy a second hand 200 TDI air box and get a search going on ebay for a second hand Safari snorkel.

Right cheers for that this seems to be more and more complicated as easy as it may seem to sum!!
The airbox on the pic shows a side exit mine is on the front has it been modified??

When I did mine I had a length of straight pipe straight off the AFM (Ask me why!) and then a flexi pipe that doubled back on itself and put a cone filter on the end of the snorkel which I put a bracket on the top of and pop riveted it to my roof rack to stop the local thieving toe rags from nicking it! I also had a protective cover for it to protect it from the trees.

This is why I say getting a 200TDI air box and a safari snorkel is the way forward.

thanks RRB  :D

I even had the top of the tube streched by the exhaust guy so the mushroom could fit inside (lets you have bigger pipe) instead of outside then added a couple of star torque with pin security self tappers to stop the top getting nicked ;) and a bit of black rubber fuel pipe split to push on where the wing was cut...

I like cheap .....

but love free .......

I have to say this project was a lot easyier than I thought it would be and it's well worth having a go ...Roof rack has been started photos (and with a bit of luck sizes and instructions) will start going up soon .IF it works 8-[

I must admit, mine was on the car when we bought it, just that the muppet had not connected it up :roll:

I'm not a fan of accessories just for the "look", I'm not out to impress anyone.

southdown do a bit for the wing save a mis aline cut only then needs 2 1/2 exhuast pipe and flexi hose and top

How do you guys find your V8 top end performance with a 21/2" pipe? Mine lost about 5-10 mph off its cruising speed. I only got it back when I went to the recommended 3" ID. Mind you mine was a 4.2L that I liberated from an LSE!

Also I noticed one of you guys has a U flexi straight off the AFM. Don't you find this causes your motor to run lumpy? Only I found it disturbed the air flow over the AFM sensor I had to put a straight pipe on to correct this. It was more pronounced with the LPG as it caused it to blow back and all sorts of weird stuff.

no idea how the rebuit tvr 350 engine in mine now will handle it havent hooked it all up yet . my current afm last 2 weeks  :doh: :doh: :doh:

seems to run okay using the disco top end fuel system . as for air maybe a roof scoop would be ideal for maxium air and fuel ratio works well on rally cars  :-k

but the pics you put up are of a range rover?  do you have one on your v8 i the disco

My TDI is done much the same as these guys, only I used a John Deere intake flexi from my airbox throughto the hole-in-the-wing at the bottom of the windscreen pillar to keep joints to a minimum..........I basically just went for the widest diameter pipe I could fit (hence my wing looks slightly dented out at one point).

You could always have snorkel on either side of the screen if your worried about it not being able to breath? My maye did that on his rangie when he put the GMC V8 diesel in!!

are you shore it's a TVR engine and not a rover engine out or a TVR?
