Where to find the VIN, theres loads of places they've been put over the years. The chassis stamping is theoretically the easyest to locate is they are all roughly in the same place on most landys, that is the outside of the front right spring hanger behind the front bumper - basically as forward and right as you can get, stamped on the thicker bit. In reality paint, rust and chassis repairs could render it unreadable or missing.Chassis number plate. Various locations over the years, you might also have an army plate which probably also has it but there still should be a rover plate too - on later vehicles it also has weights on it. Places to look... Inside the cab... Middle of bulkhead, bulkhead near steering column, seatbox. Also look for 4 holes where the plate used to be before it got lost - It happens! Under bonnet... Front panel near rad, bulkhead near master cylinders, master cylinder bracket itself. They tend to be riveted on.The chassis/VIN number will eather be about 9 numbers followed by a suffix letter (old style rover chassis number) or a 17 digit mix of numbers and letters beginning SAL (modern worldwide standardised VIN number, used from the early 80's).Surely if you've got info off a logbook it'll have the VIN/chassis number on it too?
Series 3 of that age would have the chassis number on a plate on the bonnet slam plate.It's Forces service plate was usually above the footwell benath the steering wheel. This would give it's batch number, service registration number and chassis number.If you can find the service reg, you can contact Army Logistics who can usually give you all the work it's done up to demob.
