Log book info

 Just bought a series 3 lightwight.

 On the log book it claims vehicle was registered in 1981 and colour is red.

 is this the year of manufacture and is the colour right to when  it left the military or is it possible that it was never owned by the military?

 Any info would be great.

More likely it's demob date, you might be able to get an age related plate on it if you can trace it's history.

Red, hmmmm.  most likley it was repainted to the customer's spec by the company who demobbed it rather than it leaving the forces in that colour, unless it was a fire tender or similar.

 Not got logbook at present so will have to wait before tracing history but  cheers for the info

Whats the chassis number, that should give you the year (well, some do in an understandarble way).  If its an 80's model it'll probubly have a 17 digit VIN number beginning SAL - one of those numbers/letters will be the model year (can't remember which, its the same position for any modern car but they need decodeing anyway).  If you want to be more spacific or its not got the modern style VIN (the old chassis numbers after 1961 didn't have a model year in them) then ring up Gaydon. Someone in the archive will be able to tell you the day your chassis number was built over the phone, or in a letter that the DVLA will recognise as proof of age - handy if you need an age related plate.  Phoneing is free, letters are cheep.  If you want one of their fancy Certificates they cost more but you won't get any more info from that.  They only recorded basic stuff like build number, chassis number, dates in and out of despatch (date in = date of manufacture), colour and despatch location.  Stuff like engine and body type only come from the chassis number.

 Not sure myself but a friend with a series 2 told me that the vin plate is in the middle of the dash, dont know how true that is but might be worth a look

Where to find the VIN, theres loads of places they've been put over the years.  The chassis stamping is theoretically the easyest to locate is they are all roughly in the same place on most landys, that is the outside of the front right spring hanger behind the front bumper - basically as forward and right as you can get, stamped on the thicker bit.  In reality paint, rust and chassis repairs could render it unreadable or missing.

Chassis number plate.  Various locations over the years, you might also have an army plate which probably also has it but there still should be a rover plate too - on later vehicles it also has weights on it.  Places to look... Inside the cab... Middle of bulkhead, bulkhead near steering column, seatbox.  Also look for 4 holes where the plate used to be before it got lost - It happens!  Under bonnet... Front panel near rad, bulkhead near master cylinders, master cylinder bracket itself.  They tend to be riveted on.

The chassis/VIN number will eather be about 9 numbers followed by a suffix letter (old style rover chassis number) or a 17 digit mix of numbers and letters beginning SAL (modern worldwide standardised VIN number, used from the early 80's).

Surely if you've got info off a logbook it'll have the VIN/chassis number on it too?

If I were you I'd get it checked out with Gaydon  for a definite build date, mine came to me registered on a 'Y' plate as an '83 motor but that's when it was demobbed and first registered on civilian plates, I checked it out and it was built in Dec '73  :'( :'( so it isn'tax free but I still got it re-registered on an age related plat 'M'. If you're really lucky you could find yours was built on or before Dec 31st '72 which would make it free tax  :dance: :dance: and you can then re-register it on an age related plate as well.

nope even on the log book its just a 8 digit number number no letters or anything else

 well I got the logbook so got in touch with gaydon and info was given.

 It was built sep 78 and was green so thats my questions answered

It's Forces service plate was usually above the footwell benath the steering wheel. This would give it's batch number, service registration number and chassis number.
If you can find the service reg, you can contact Army Logistics who can usually give you all the work it's done up to demob.

phone gaydon with chassis number to get any free info they have, best way of tracing paint is to look there it chips somewhere and see all the different colours n layers! its like counting the rings of a tree! :lol:
