2.5TD - Rebuild or Exchange??
« on: April 27, 2008, 16:23:53 »
Hi, My 90 has a 150k 2.5TD 19J engine (diesel). It's got no power and the air filter is getting clogged with oil. Seems to be coming from rocker cover breather. Is this terminal? If so -  do I rebuild or transplant? Suggestions please. :'(

had the same problem a few months ago, dont bother rebuilding, waste of time and money. I rebuilt the head twice, and bottom  once. and a month later the head cracked. i bought a 300 tdi in the end and it cost less than it did rebuilding the thing.

bottom line, transplant not worth throwing money at it

hi. i rebuilt our turbo diesel engine. worked out cheaper than transplanting an unknown engine. we needed new pistons as the tops had cracked. regardless of the time it took me to do, using all genuine parts including new rods valves and stem seals and every gasket possible it only cost me £350. couldn't get a 200tdi straight fit for that price. if you got a disco one you would then have to get the manifold down pipe conversion, new clutch whilst its out and do the timing belt c/w full service.
It now runs like a dream and will easily hold 70 on motorways.

have to agree with Chrisputt - get a 200 tdi from a disco and transplant it, seen so many TDs suffer from hot running , oil leaks and heavy breathing.

also with a 200 under the bonnet it will leave the TD standing in performance and mpg terms. Do the conversion and you will wonder why you ever thought about rebuilding the TD.

As LeanneNCharlie said, you can rebuild the engine for around 350 quid, (about the same as what i did it for), if you do it yourself. If your thinking of having some1 else do it, thats gonna be a lot of labour and would be cheaper to go for recon.  Also after you've rebuilt it how longs it gonna take for something else to go wrong? As has been said they do run hot and from an engineers view the engine is not designed to take the extra stresses assosiated with the turbo.  That being said, how is the turbo? if the engines been breathing heavy is it all gunked up or are the bearings on the way out? all things to concider.

imho a tdi is the way forward, altho the initial pay out will be more you will get that back in mph, torque, power, and not having to keep replacing bits and pieces.  I did it on a very tight budget and the only thing i regret is not having done it sooner.
