Tyre wear problem
« on: April 27, 2008, 17:15:25 »
Hi All

Ever since buying the Disco I have had a problem with the passenger front tyre wearing twice as fast as the other three tyres, I have had the wheels balanced and the tracking done and there is no evdence of a bump to suggest that anything is bent or out of line ,but the outer edge of the tyre wears very fast .
This has happened on the road tread 205's and the mud 235's it's got to the point where I buy 6 tyres so I can swap the front near side on it's own .

The owner of the local landy garage was behind me a while back heading towards Caernarfon ,He says I drive too fast and take corners way too fast could this be the reason the one tyre is wearing . also a tyre fitter last time I had them balanced said that the front near side wears more because of the cambre on the roads.

No shimmer .

and it's happend on two sets of rims and three sets of tyres..

wheel bearings are fine as is alignment.

question is will the cambre on the road or driving too fast wear the outer edge of the nearside front tyre???

and has anyone else had the same problem on a disco...

I'd have thought both fronts would wear equally if it was down to excess speed in corners - assuming you do the same commute in both directions then the car will face an equal number of left and right hand bends.

just out of interest have you tried swappin front to rear and left to right and does this wear the same?

are there lots of round-a-bouts your way???

taking corners hard can put strain on the passenger front, im guessing you brake while you start turning? like i do this will do

There are six roundabouts on the way to work

yes I've tried revolving the tyres and the nearside front always wears it must be down to the roundabouts and my driving

If everything else is fine then sounds like it is roundabouts and other right handed corners. Remember if taken at any kind of speed, the front passenger tyre will take most of the steering strain and most of the weight as the vehicle leans and lightens the load on the driver side.

Lee

Consensus appears to be roundabouts...

All I will say is that we are near Milton Keynes and our local tyre chap can tell you exactly who works in MK from the frequency of NSF tyres that they have fitted

When I ran on Goodyear 205 R16's and Maxxis (spits) 235/70 R 16's, I suffered from NSF tyre wear like this.  The Goodyear's used to last 20-25k and the wider Maxxis and gave 12-18k a tyre, despite rotating the tyres around the Disco.

Since changing to BFG AT 235/70 R16's after the first 6k rotation (including spare) I did not see such wear on the NSF, indeed all the tyres still had the little rubber nodules that you get on a new tyre.  Just checked at 9k and the nodules are still visible.

I'd heard that BFG AT's tend to last upwards of 40k and it seems this is not a myth.

I've settled on 27psi front and 32psi rear, 28 up front was too bouncy for my liking and tended to upset the steering through the worst bumps on bends, giving the impression of 'pattering', and the front drifting/ploughing on through a bend.  32 at the back is about right, although I will vary the rears with different loads for longer journeys.

I've been doing tyre loading calculations and these appear to be consistent with the results from varying the pressures.

Not unless he drives on the opposite side of the road on the way home.

My mum has this problem on her 2001 Shogun. Im pretty sure its down to camber and driving style. :)

I run my tyres a little higher presure as when they are lower it tends to wallow more in high speed corners (too much wall movement) it gives a more comfrotable ride but also makes me more nervous cornering 8-[

Not too worried now  as I've just got three new 235/85 colway muds off ebay, so that with the part worns in the shed should give me another couple of years motoring.. :D

Thanks for the replies
