Second truck
« on: April 28, 2008, 14:33:22 »
I'm 17 and have so far been driving a fourtrak.up until a week ago when it was written off doing a good deed.I now have a budget of £1000 and was wondering whether a landy would be suitable.Just was wondering about efficiency and practicality and off roading ability.Any help would be appreciated.

Your budget would get you an ok Disco or RRC, but I doubt a Defender.

RRC=range rover classic

RRC and Disco are a lot bigger than a fourtrak. I would say thay are both a better option.

Personally i wouldn't touch a £1000 disco / rangey unless you can weld.  Take someone who knows where to look when viewing as they suffer from badly with rot.  Bargains can be had though.

if its got more than 6 months MOT and its under a grand then you are laughing even if it does turn out to be knackered because you can nearly make that back selling it in spares when MOT time comes round. But i wouldnt say that a disco is any worse for rot than a fourtrack of the same age.

A TDi discovery will have similar performance to the fourtrak, similar MPG etc. spare parts a lot cheaper though.  A discovery will be as good as or maybe better off road than a fourtrak, maybe ith a bit worse departure angle though. IIRC you cant tow 3.5t with a fourtrak but you can with a disco.

definately worth checking fleabay there are some bargains to be had.just make sure it has an MOT! I was thinking of getting a disco as a runaround for harvest and there were some well under a grand with at least 6 months MOT on.

discos and rrc's both have a ladder chassis similar to the fourtrack. Having driven a fourtrak off road landys definatly have the advantage off road.  they are bigger than the fourtrak but alot more comfortable.  also theres alot more aftermarket parts out there for landys. as long as you get a motor with decent engine and drivetrain the rest is relitivley simple to fix up.
