Should It Be Re-Branded??

I thought that the Range Rover "Calssic" was so named by Land Rover as they were very unsure of the success of the P38 Rangey so kept the old model running along side for a while and called it the "Classic".

I can think of any other car marque where the Mark1 is the de-facto classic, MG, Lotus Rover etc..

So I suppose I should vote NO, Im not sure if a Disco will achieve "classic" status for a while, its a very subjective area as to whats a classic and whats just "old", even if the car is accepted as a good marque/model and I like discos, especially commercials for some reason.

When they reach 40 years of age, we can then begin to consider if it should have the Classic name.  That is of course, if there are any left by that point.  :lol:

On a serious note.  I will be surprised if the Discovery does earn the "Classic" status, it just seems that it will probably become one of the many cars lost to time.  It was really the first of the modern day SUVs, since the Range Rover was a utilitarian motor when it was first released too, and used Range Rover running gear so wasn't really ground breaking either... 

Long live the proper Land Rovers!  :P

I would say yes, but bear in mind that Range Rover Classic isn't the correct term for all pre-P38A Range Rovers, only the final ones LR were building at the same time as the first P38As.

The early One Ten is already merging into the "Classic" brand like the Series motors before it.  We're talking about the two piece door ones with slanted slidey windows, V8 or 2.25 diesel/petrol engines...

I'm not sure the question was whether the Disco 1 deserves 'classic status', more should we call it something different...... I'm sure Lee calls his something else sometimes when it breaks..... probably not repeatable here  :lol:

The reason I started this is guy at work pointed out that my disco is 20 years old next year and had I thought of classic insurance now, I know that no company is going to touch me with classic insurance with the mods on the car then that got me thinking about classic cars in general how old does it have to be to become a classic??

And does age make it a car classic at all ( I've worked on a few old cars that are definitely not classic)

Age and interest by people makes a vehicle a classic.  Otherwise all the ancient horrors of BL would be Classics too, but they're not are they?

When Firebond existed, both my 110 (1983) and Suzuki Samurai (1990) were insured under a limited mileage classic policy with agreed value. Both were fairly heavily modified.

My 1991 Mecedes Benz 190E was also going to be insured on a classic policy with AON (who now own Firebond) until they quoted me £400  :shock: It is now on my works policy and cost me the grand sum of zero Pounds  :dance:

When I had a 1988 2CV, that was also on a classic policy.

It doesn't appear to be purely based on the age of the vehicle when it comes to insurance.

Helps to be a member of a club too. Mud Club works to get a discount..... I've used it!

I'm sure they offer discount for just about any reason (they make enough profit!), but it still feels good, doesn't it?  :D
