M6 Toll

Just come off the M6 Toll, now heading up the M6, just curious as to why people don't seem to want to use the Toll road?

People do use it, just not as heavily as the main M6. I know people who always use it as they're pretty much guaranteed a clear run rather than the jams often found on that part of the M6.

I use it because the fuel I save driving at the speed limit outweighs the fuel I use sat at 5mph going the other way! Therefore it's cheaper.

I have often wondered if traffic jams on motorways are not engineered by the government. I pay £100 to fill a tank with fuel only to spend half my time sat still on a blocked motorway burning it going no-where so I need more to get to where I wanted to go!!!

Have to agree there! The amount of times ive been stuck in "congestion" for no apparent reason, the cause of it, every one being slowed to 40.  if they just left the limit to 70 they wouldnt have to tell me there is conjestion.

How many times have people been slowed to 40/50 when the roads completly empty??

How come the overhead signs always tell you when the Toll Road is clear but not when the M6 is clear (which is more often than we're led to believe ).
I never ever use it.
If i have a job north of Stafford it would cost £18-00 return per day.
Over the course of a week i'd have to sit in a hell of a jam to use an extra £90 in diesel even at todays prices.
At the end of the day how do i tell Mr Customer..... "Your invoice includes £18 per day in Toll Charges"

I don't use it because it's not on the way to work, and I think going from home to work via birmingham is a 300 mile detour I could do without, then again recent roadworks round here have meant a detour not far off it anyhow :(

The ones that annoy me are rigidly enforced 50mph limits around roadworks, where there isn't anyone working! Fair enough while people are on site but leaving the speed limit (and inevitable cameras) on to protect a bunch of traffic cones is ridiculous.

i hate having to pay double when the caravan is on. No doubt we will have the same arguement on the way to GAydon as we do every year, do we or dont we use the toll rd. Usually do going as it is normally rush hour but this year it will cost a fortune as we are in 2 landys. Might be a good experiment to see who gets there the quickest via which route !

Best bit of road in the country, you can horse on at 70 no problem all day long, even in the first lane,no stop/starts, very few truck's, never any conjestion even when there is an accident. oh and the plus point, its free for me.

Yes, it was regarded as slow response, but I also used to drive fast response, I did once manage 135mph on the A49, although usually 105mph max due to traffic and road conditions, all emergency journeys, but of course these were the days before they started prosecuting the Police for doing 159mph.

Which I think is pretty damn stupid, since when I did advanced driver training, we went out on public roads in cars without audible and visual warning devices fitted, and exceeded the speed limit all day and all night, often practising box overtakes at 90-100mph with the Police in similarly equipped vehicles, how else do you improve your driving skills?  Video games?

Mind you, we always did do more emergency journeys than the Police and Fire put together

i have used it once whilst taking parent to brum airport - it was rush hour so did save me a bit of time - which i lost when i rejoined the M42!

Erm yes...

I'm currently designing training where we are using a motion platform simulator for an armoured engineer vehicle.

• It minimises wear, tear & maintenance costs
• is safer
• allows more realistic situations to be created
• allows students to learn through cause and effect
• allows students to try the same scenario using different techniques more than once
• Allows for consistent testing of multiple students

Course... it doesn't remove the need for real vehicle experience completely... but it does make the real vehicle time much more effective.

Mmm...could never happen in the NHS there's never any money, even for paying the staff.

If it did happen it'd be on a shoe string like everything else; so they'd buy a ZX Spectrum and some driving game from the late 80's and after half an hour they'd say you're trained...

Used to think it was great when I had a car caperble of over 80, I was still one of the slowest cars on the road.  That was when it was new so had novelty factor and the prices wern't so bad (couple of quid).  Now the prices are silly and I don't drive so fast.  It might be worth it if you need the time factor but its not economical purely on fuel saveing/toll ratio.

Used it in the landy once when the A38 had been closed and I was in a rush, stopped to remove the bonnet  mounted spare first thogh - not paying double for that!  Seemed a bit odd doing 65 in a diesel series 1 on the M6T!

The Syncro will never go anywhere near the M6 toll as it trips the hieght meter and would get charged an extorsion, £7 last I checked, probubly more now, dad got cought out like that in a VW T3 before (with a caravan too so it really cost a fortune) - just not worth it, if I don't want to use the M6 its the A5 every time.

Personly I think they should remove the speed limit from the M6 toll a la autobahn so it becomes a track day where you travel somewhere - then they could put the price up and it'd still be worth it.  People who don't want such speed around them could simply avoid it, and if people have a place to go wild they might not do so on normal motorways so often?

According to a family member who's a civil engineer there is sometimes a valid resion for this, due to the concrete barears used.  Some are pretty tough and will stop anything going through them (safe for workforce) but if you hit them at higher speeds (above 50mph in some cases) they will make a serous mess of you so the limit has to be reduced while they are in place.  There are other types of concrete block barrear that look similar but can stand higher speeds apparently, though I'm sure there are spec differences taken into account when deploying them.
