P51D Mustangs....
« on: May 08, 2008, 10:22:24 »
Had the pleasure of spending yesterday evening in a hanger with a Stearman, an Auster, a Cesna 172, a Harvard and two, yes two, P51D Mustangs   Please feel free to feel jealous

I am afraid I may have come across a little awestruck... actually, I know I came across awestruck! Despite the owner making me very welcome it was all a bit overwhelming. The Mustangs are truly beautiful. One is currently flying, the other is nearing completion and should be airworthy by the end of the summer. Here's Janie, the one that already has it's certification.

One of the magnetos was being replaced and they are running it up on Saturday to check the timing. Unfortunately, i will be working. But i should be OK to go along again in the near future.

I've seen Janie in action several times. Last time, by coinsidence, was Monday. We often see him over where we work. The whole industrial site comes to a standstill to watch!

I had my camera in the car last night, but forgot all about it  I'll get some pictures next time I'm there  :D

Here are some more of his collection...

Which Auster was it?  Was it one of the G-AJ** ones?

My dad currently owns three of those.  I think he's trying to get the full alphabet!!   :D

Ah, a Lycoming engined one.  My dad collects the Cirrus engined ones.  Looks like a nice example though.

It's wierd.  Even though the V is an older aircraft, it just doesn't look right with that cowl hiding the Lycoming.  It looks too modern.

witnesed this..
information from http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/index.php

1. Barton Aerodrome 1984-ish P-51D Mustang 2/3 replica

2/3 replica Mustang crashed after failing to recover from a roll. IIRC the aircraft was being flown by a former Red Arrows pilot but the aircraft was not certified for aerobatic manouevres and the engine cut out at the top of a roll (fuel starvation?) - the a/c failed to recover and went vertically into a boggy field on the far side of the aerodrome. I remember the engine revving (restarting?) on the way down as the pilot tried to recover. There was no explosion just a big pile of dirt/debris thrown up. Sadly, the pilot was killed.

I had sneeked in with a friend as we had done since we were kids (17 when it happened) we'ed been going for a least 5 years to see shows and stuff ,We were sat in the boggy field with about 50 other people when it crashed 50 yards away no boom just a dull thump ,never been to an air show since :'(

Got a bit of a shock when this flew very low over our house today - by the time I got the camera out it was climbing and turning away from me.

My father has a few stories to tell about the Lancaster and Wellington Bombers from the time he was doing his National Service with the RAF.

According to the 'BBMF' website (Display Dates), it was flying over Barnsley (presumably en-route to Elvington)

I've seen it coming over here too, it was last year.

What a glorious noise

But................. do you know where you can stand 10 yards from 4 Merlins being fired up & run???????

I've been & it's fanbl**dytastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We were on our way to the Suffolk Show when the Lancaster flew over. It was heading north at about 11am.
