stalls and wont restart
« on: May 08, 2008, 22:00:54 »
Hi all, got a 3.5 efi disco 1991
usually  starts ok on first time of asking, but if it stalls or coughs it almost certainly wont restart        if i get a push /tow she fires up straight away no problems, starter is quite new and turns over pretty fast enough for the engine to fire,  replaced the cap/rotor arm plugs ect, swapped a few airflow meters about, was thinking of doing a compression or cylinder leak test, worn camshaft ????? sounns like a kitten though when running and drives ok though,  its really frustating as i cant trust her anymore  :(

  any clues   :-k

P.S it does have a flat spot/slight hesitation when coming off idle ??
TD5 with a few Tweaks ;o)

Had similar issues with a 3.5 Rangie - it turned out to be the lamda sensor

Maybe others can comment though.

What about the coil had a problem with mine it would start ok but would do the same thing as yours plus backfire and or just not idle and if left for about 10 mins it would cool down enough to start up. Put a new coil on and all was fine. hope that helps

I had another problem that was similar and showed similar features on my old Fiat Uno.

Sometimes it would just refuse to start, but then would start fine 30 mins later or with a tow, it turned out to be the brush on the rotor arm on the distributor. It would also idle unevenly and had a bit of a flatspot so it might be worth a look?

Both the ignition coil and the ignition amplifier can go intermittent , and be temperature sensitive.   No easy way to tell which might your problem, the end result is the same - no sparks.

Has your Disco got the dreaded immobilser 'spider'?  These can cause low voltage at the coil positive side.  You can check for that with a meter - with ignition on and stopped, you should see battery voltage; with engine running 13.5 to 14V.   If you see readings like 9 to 11V sometimes, the spider will be nacked - its got burnt internal relay points.  Sometimes they close nicely and give good volts to the coil, sometimes they don't and give low volts.

cheers, Ross K
