Anyone been to the alps driving?

Evening all ,
We're off to the alps this summer , hopefully with some offroad time.
Has anyone been or recommend routes?
I've heard there's a road you can drive up to the top of a glacier , possibly in the Italian alps - anyone know it?

Done that. Went guided tour though so cant help you with the route. Loads of pics in my gallery.

Hannibals trail is well known though so you shouldnt have any trouble finding info on the net.

Don't forget the access roads to the ski lifts. Worth driving :-)

 :lol:....Done this trip loads of times..I go from Zeebrugge in Belguim and drive across France to La Tania in the three Valleys...once there you are in the region of most of the top French Ski resorts which also cater for large amounts of off roading and mountain bike trails...I always take the French autoroutes travellng through Lille,St. Quentin, Macon,Lyon and Albertville.The mileage is 650 miles and we usually get to the resort by 7.00 pm.Once there you virtually have all of the French Alps to play in and the French just love this sort of thing.Another fabulous resort for off roading and particular down hill mountain biking is La Clusac which again is'nt very far from Albertville.....hope this helps...in June my good lady and myself have hired a Motor Home and I'm going back to the Alps again.....God's second Country after the Yorkshire Moors and Dales...good luck :D :D

we drove through the alps at the end of the 90's and found some routes up above the snow line, could only advise looking on a map for the smallest white roads with the most hairpins  :lol:
we did the alps in the land rover in last summer with landy rally and broke down in a little down and waited for the swiss police to open a garage to get us some EP90 to send us on our way, a friendly nation we have found

I have been there twice in the Elise, absolutly amazing scenery and the roads were superb.  I have driven the roads they did in that top gear special about the best roads in the world (Stelvio is not the best its the road to Obergurgle that is!)

Min you the Stelvio pass looks pretty impressive,

The only thing I know about 4x4ing is that the different countaries have very different (stric) rules so you need a local guide/map that you can trust. LRO did a two month thing on the Hanibal Trail or try klookihng round the web, but make sure you know everything or you may wind up in clink!
