It was the 65th anniversary flypast yesterday over Derwent Reservoir.

My pics didn't come out too well but I got a couple of videos of the Lancaster and Dakota.

What a wonderful sight to see the Lancaster re-enact the Dambuster flight but why on earth was the Dakota there :-.

He saw the Lanc and decided if it was legal for the Lanc... it'd be legal for him to join in... Bet he didn't check with the ROW officer...!

IIRC the Dakota is the support plane for the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, whose Lancaster this is. They use it for transport and crew training as there aren't many multi-engined tailsitter aircraft around and letting new pilots take the Lanc up straight away wouldn't be a good idea!

It was a great morning out. The Lancaster made three passes both down then up the valley, this was the second. The last time it was escorted by two tornados which made an almighty noise.

After the Lancaster, the Spitfire and Hurricane made a few passes, then the Dakota finished things off - made it look very slow compared to the others, and I thought the Lancaster was slow - amazing how they all didn't get shot out of the sky?. The Dakota is a recent addition to the memorial flight as I think it was pretty instrumental in most paracute drops plus the Berlin air lift.

Mohne dam after the raid, in May 43.

Bomber command used to fly during the day, but due to heavy losses to german fighters. They had to switch to night flying, in a hope to give the overloaded slow bombers a chance. It is a miracal that any actually made it back, never mind survived the war! With losses of over 60% (more than 55,000 lives and 10,724 planes lost) it was a heavy loss.

For every 100 crew members over 30 bombing missions (a single tour),
51 Killed on operations
9 Killed in crashes in England
3 Seriously injured
12 Prisoner of War
1 Evaded capture
24 Survived unharmed

I don't think anyone who has seen the BBMF Lancaster in action will forget it - I've seen it at RIAT two years running when it got twice the attention of the USAF B-52 that displayed shortly after!

If you go down to the Panton brothers museum at East Kirkby in Locolnshire, you can actually pay a (unknown.. to me) sum & ride in their Lancaster whilst it's taxiing.


I've been there, & seen it running & the 2-seater Spitfire in the air.

It's a 'Got To Hear' sound, as all 4 Merlins are run-up not a dozen yards away :clap: :clap: :clap: :clap:
Then held on the throttles, as the tail-plane oscillates laterally with the power :drool:

(& the Spitfire appears overhead for a few fly-pasts)

yea when its taxiing the wings pass above you you stand that close to it. Then it goes up the taxi way turns at the top so its facing you then it throttles up big time. It has been said that sometimes they get the tail section to lift off the ground as its standing still just from the power of the engines

Very nice pics. been sehing the pc for my pics but cant find them looks like daughter has removed some of "her" old pics and some of mine. When i went last year spent a full day there they had a spitfire in the back of the hanger were all the crash pics and info is that you could sit in. but didn't have a a flying one on the day i went shame it would of been nice to see
