Straight through pipe - legal ?
« on: May 18, 2008, 22:27:16 »

At Driffield I purchased stainless downpipe to remove the CAT, also stainless middle pipe that gets rid of the centre box for my 300tdi Discovery.
I was going to put a stainless rear pipe with silencer on, but have started thinking - do I need a rear silencer ? Would a straight through pipe pass an MOT?
Would it be too loud ? I'm thinking the turbo knocks most of the noise out.

What do you think ?
Anyone else done it ?

Cheers Paul.

I think you've just swung the idea of fitting a side exit exhaust with no silencing

All the ones I have heard sound like a tractor, and rightly so they should!  Proper diesel engines.

my 200tdi runs a bodged up 2.5" side exit exhaust,
the turbo muffles most of the noise til you open the throttle
mine has apparently caused small children to spontaneously burst into tears :D

My v8 disco have only got the cats on, the rest is straight through with a side exit. Sounds sooooo much nicer than the 300 tdi it was on last  :afro:

I suppose a diesel through a straight through pipe would sound infintely better than a dustbin sized rear box on a 1.4 Saxo.

A tuned TD5 with straight through pipe sounds like this

http://www.youtube.com/v/u7UOakf6_vQ&hl=en

On my 90 I had the same exhaust system but with a silencer as I was advised the setup in the video was a bit noisy to live with.

That TD5 sounds just like one of the tractors at the farm, just slightly higher pitched!

I cant remember what the date is, but im 99.99% sure that vehicles manufacturer after a certain date MUST have a CAT fitted to pass an MOT, EVEN IF it passes on Emissions, technically a visual check must be made to see if its in place.  That said I know a few people with Elises that have never had a problem!

Can anyone confirm that date?

You can just knock the middle out of a duff cat, I had to do that at a race last year when my cat blew apart in practice. Looks like a cat form the outside but no restriction on the inside.

dont know about the date but we always had to refit the cats to get them through the emission test, makes a big difference to a petrol .totaly different test. ive not got one on mine no probs doesnt alter the smoke test as i know but you may be right . might be a similar thing to the anti roll bar thing... took them off too.  alan..

I dont believe there is any requirement to fit a catalytic convertor on a car in the UK. Although to meet the emissions levels on a modern petrol engine I think its virtually a requirement. On a diesel engine you can remove the cat with no issues.
