Yorkshire Dales places to go/drive

Hi All

I am planning a 10 day stay at Ingleton on the edge of the yorkshire dales in Nearest big place looks like kirkby lonsdale...

Any recomendations on places to visit for the family and are there any regional meets around I could pop in on ...

never been there before so interested in replies from locals...

Erm, you will not be far from deepdale offroad, but Im not 100% if they are still open, im sure you could google them.  Hawes is a nice little town plus there is a great road called Cam High Road but they closed some of it off.  There is also a few great lanes round there from Middleton to Lofthouse.  LRO drove it a few months back.

I'm taking the family and the dog and won't be laning or off roading as I have to tow the caravan back (Maybe a little easy non damaging laning) just after places to visit and stuff .

I've tried googleing the local area but thats just bringing up the same stuff over and over again . Local info is better than payed links ;)

Try the white scar caves and the warerfall walk in settle theres also a falconry centre near settle and malham cove is worth a visit

Yeah they are good, but not if your chlostrophobic.
Also, it may be quite a drive but go to Forbidden Corner if you have kids, as the kids are an excuse for the adults to go, weve been 3 times now and love it!!!

If your in the Ingleton area, a walk around Ingleton falls coming back down Beezley falls is a very nice walk, they used to have a small open air swimming pool in Ingleton, not sure if its still open.

Kendal is a nice town to visit, then your not far from the Lakes.  :D

If you like a hill walk the flat top fell of Ingleborough is a good one, there are several routes the one I like is from Clapham village, takes you through some woodland, past Clapham cave which is open to the public, then on up a rocky scrabble onto the moorland ascending up Ingleborough the final part has steep rock steps, well worth the climb on a clear day, be careful on misty day or fog with it being flat top you can soon loose your bearings, compass and map recommended we got caught in mist last time. link to walk http://www.walkingenglishman.com/dales11.htm

Riverside walk from devils bridge Kirkbylonsdale, and if you feeling brave swim in the river its cold i know i've done it.

Forbidden Corner is a definite in my book, the website for there is a bit crap but the place itself  is great for kids old and young. You need to book before you go. There is the Wensleydale Cheese factory at Hawes which is good (if you like cheese!) as you can try all the different varieties before you buy. The cafe/restaurant there is excellent.

Aysgarth falls is a good place to stop for a stroll about. Parking can get a bit tight if you get there too late. Where else? There is the Wensleydale Railway at Leyburn and whilst at Leyburn there is the Teapot Factory (free) and the Chocolate Factory (also free but expensive to buy choccies).

The Royal Greenjackets museum is up that way but I am not sure what the opening times are. The James Herriot Museum at Thirsk is worth a visit. There are a couple of good fords up there. If you have a TOMTOM then there is an OV2 file that you can download and install on your device which will tell you where the fords are :)

If you've got time a day trip to Whitby is a good day out. Fish and chips at the Magpie cafe are compulsory.

Of course it's a War-Zone!!!, Kirkby Lonsdale is on the border with those heathens to the west*

The major bases have been covered for that particular part of the world,as 'KL' is a bit of an outpost.

'Devils Bridge' is a beautiful structure & well-worth a stroll around


Warning!!
Be very wary, if you're on the A65 (main trunk road that passes through 'KL', or decided to drive over to Hawes Creamery (especially after visiting Ingleton) along the B6255.
Both roads have a lot to 'trap' the unwary driver, & can be plagued with motorcyclists.
No offence to any bikers on here, but there are a few fools on both roads.


Ribblehead Viaduct, along the B6255 is another structure that definately demands attention (it's on the Settle-Carlisle line)


Heading back down the A65, towards Yorkshire
1. Settle. Is a lovely little market town, with some charming little places.
2. Skipton. Has the castle, the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, a great street market (can't remember the days) Embsay Steam Railway, Bolton Abbey (isn't too far away),
3. Keighley. Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (where the original 'Railway Children' film was shot), Haworth (Bronte Sisters, is just up the valley)
4. Bingley. 'Three-rise' & 'Five-rise locks' on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal - fantastic industrial heritage icons

Thanks, a lot of the bikers are sensible, but there's always one who thinks he can overtake that car/van/truck before the opposing traffic/scary corner.

It can be the same when I go out towards 'Squires' (as linked below), but thankfully they seem to be more circumspect around (unpowered) 2-wheelers :clap: Although I have scared a few bikers in the past over-taking them down East Chevin (Otley, West Yorkshire) at over 60MPH! :shock: :shock: :shock:


Anyway, returning to the main topic;
The Green Howards Regiment museum is in Richmond, at the easterly end of the simply gorgeous Swaledale.

Richmond itself is a wonderful town, nestling on the steep banks of the River Swale.
Quite surprisingly (to the outsider), the museum is attached to a Church in the middle of the Market Square!
There's a lovely castle there too, plus when it's 'the season', Salmon can be observed jumping up the waterfall on the Swale on their way to spawn

I would highly recommend fish and chips in Whiby followed by an evening tour.  In all honest though you can't really go wrong anywhere round there.  You just might find that you spend time going from place to place rather than staying somewhere all day - but it depends on what you do.
