glow plug removel
« on: May 27, 2008, 18:53:55 »
i have just found out that one of the glow plugs is stuck in the head. its the second one in from the windscreen. who ever had the car before me obviously tried to remove it without success. the head has been twisted off so a spanner cannot be used. how hard is it to remove the cylinder head and try to tap out the plug or should i try to get it to a garage.
Thx Ian

hi,once you removed the wires and the forked bracket, spray a little lubricant around the glow plug, get a reasonable pair of grips and just turn back and forth, its not screwed in. just sits in cavity. the glowplug bottom, only goes mm in to the haed so you'll have more chance with grips or indeed get a angle grinder and gently make a  new slots for a spanner.

hope this helps Rob

I had a similar problem with a glow plug breaking off in the head. I got my tame mechanic to remove the head and tap it out, which he did easily, before passing the bill to the shop that sold me the glow plug  :D

I drove the motor for over a week in the hope that the compression would blow it out of the hole but no luck and there wasn't anything to grip as it broke off where the heater element comes out of the outer body (i.e. deep inside the hole).
