Fuel waste?

OK, I know that allot of you will think that this is a silly question but........

When you change the fuel filter - what do you do with disposing the fuel that is in the old filter? Bearing in mind that I don't want to pollute the local water table and I live in a nature reserve. I know its not much fuel - but what is the official line on this?

I normally run up the motor to running temp first, the remove the old full filter, tip it into the new filter to prime it, then re-fit new one, crack her up, and it will run straight through  without bleeding ;)

That's what I did last time. At current prices there's about £1 of diesel in that filter, I'm not throwing it away!

I did make sure it all went in the fuel tank side of the new filter rather than the engine side, so the chances of anything nasty getting through were slim.

I did wonder about putting it back in - what do you mean "fuel tank side and engine side"? Compete novice here!   :roll:

I'm not entirely sure I did put it in the right side. If you think about it, the filter is between the fuel tank and the engine, so all the crud should end up on the fuel tank side of the filter. If you look at the top of the filter you'll notice two circular rubber seals, the inner one separates the "clean" and "dirty" sides of the filter.

I think the fuel goes into the filter outside that inner seal and is sucked out through the centre but I'm not sure. 50% chance that's wrong!
