Cambelt has gone
« on: June 01, 2008, 12:43:08 »
Pulling away from a roundabout this morning, cambelt snapped. Its at a a mates workshop witing to be stripped down to assess the damage. Beginning to get really fed up with my disco now. Seems to be one thing after another. On the verge of selling it as is and buy my brothers BMW 318iS off him.

Anyone had any experience of the cambelt going on a 200tdi Disco and how much damge it did?

Hi

I have lots of experience. Seen a good few in my time!

You will have bent 3 or 4 push rods and snapped some arms on the valve gear. 200TDI never bend valves the push rods and arms on the valve gear always break first.

The main expense will be fitting the new belt and your main problem will be getting the diesel pump timed up right.

Its not a big deal and there is certainly no need to take the head off it.

You only need to remove the rocker cover and you will have a good idea as to the damage, failing that remove the rockershaft aswell and take out the bent pushrods!

As for timing up the fuel pump all you need is a 9.5mm drill bit.

The only thing that may cause a problem is loosening the crank pulley nut(though this can be done with a strong arm wedged onto the chassis and flicking the starter motor) and actually getting the pulley off the crank(may need a puller).

Hope it all goes well

Dr Neil is right getting the crank pulley nut off is a bit of a PITA.

Hello chap, I'm not plugging items here but I have a 200tdi, with blown piston rings, however the head was rebuilt 500 miles ago. I ran fine but smoked like a dog when idling.

£200 and it's yours, I'm planning on rebuilding it if not.

not good , but as already said the worst is usually  snapped rockers, usually just a few bent p/rods, the pistons hit the valves straight on so they very very rarely get damaged. good luck .....

Have had to do the timing belt on one 200Tdi where I had to take the head off as the push rods were so bent I couldnt pull them up through the rocker cover.

Good couple of hours work to do the timing if you are used to it, and best part of a day if its the first time.
