HANDBRAKE
« on: June 16, 2008, 20:33:29 »
evening all,its me again can one of you chaps tell me how to adjust my handbrake correctly,im struggling with it.i removed the drum/housing for a genral once over as my hand brake travel was far to much maybe 10 clicks,so i thought i would check the pads while i was there and they are fine.i cleaned out all the rubbish that has gathered over the years with brake cleaner and replaced then set about adjusting it on the drum with the bolt at the bottom now i thought that was fine until i reversed it tonight to let the mrs off the drive it felt like it was on then off and making a clonking noise.my problem is that when i wind it off on the bolt again i get to much travel on the handbrake handle so im confused and need pointing in the right direction, any help would be much appreciated

When I adjusted min I lifted a wheel off the ground, tightened the bolt on the drum until I could feel some resistance when I tried to rotate the wheel then backed it off a little. I then took the cover off from around the window switches, unbolted the switch assembly so I could get access to the bottom of the handrake lever and took up the slack from the cable with the adjuster wheel. This was a complete pain to turn but I got there in the end.

Basically I just followed the instructions in my trusty Haynes manual.

Wether I did the job correctly or not it sure cured my handbrake travel and the Disco now holds itself on the second or third click.

i did have both rear wheels off the deck but they didnt turn the prop assembly that goes to/through the hand brake oh god i hope this isnt pointing to something more than just the hand brake come to think about it when i turned the prop by hand i could only get it to move less than half a turn with the hand brake off i could spin the wheels as much as i wanted with no drum or prop movement i reckon somethings busted in there dont you?

I'm not sure mate - all this is pretty new to me too but it does sound like something isn't quite right somewhere.

I'm sure someone with much more knowledge on the subject will be along to offer some more advice.

Peasy - calm down fella - they all do that - if you look at the centre console you'll see a sticker telling you to put the thing in diff-lock if you jack it up as it can get away from you if the wheels aren't on the ground - with both of the back wheels off the deck and the handbrake on, the drive into the spun wheel will just spin the diff gears and exit via the opposite wheel as its the easiest path (the hand brake holding the drum still) which actually points to there being nothing at all wrong with any of it..............

Mark is right in that you may have a stretched cable on the handbrake so you need to take a couple of turns of slack out of it then adjust the brake at the drum as you did previously - best way to do it is to chock the front wheels and jack up one back one then get an assistant to spin the jacked wheel whilst you adjust the brake listen for it rubbing ever so slightly and then back it of a notch.  But, I think you may also have shoes that are past it - its common for them to not adjust or go 'oval' when about dead, (hence your on-off symptoms above),  - how much friction material was left on them when you cleaned them up?

Also, invest a in a Haynes manual - then read it from cover to cover - it really is 15 quid well spent as it has bits that explain how stuff works if you want to get to know some of it.
Son, life has a habit of kicking you in the ass and i only have vague recollections of when it wasn't kickin mine!

ok i had a couple of deep breaths now and a few fags and im now calm,(sorry about that) i have about 6mm of friction material on them and i think that the mistake i was making was having both wheels up in the air as you rightly pointed out and i have just ordered a haynes manual but its not arrived yet so was trying to do things from memory which obviously isnt as good as it used to be lol, thanks mate i can now have a good nights sleep, cheers, paul.
