If you have a quick rummage on the web, you can find the official RAVE CD (workshop manual used by LR dealers) as a free download. It comes as a CD image to burn to disk, and is very helpful as it has proper exploded diagrams rather than the scattering of photos in a Haynes manual.

I won't post a link as it would contravene the forum policy on software piracy, but there's a site out there with all of them!

Are you sure the belts are worn out? Mine occasionally squeak if it's damp but are silenced by a quick blast at road speeds to dry them out and rub any gunge off.

not too long ago I replaced all the ones on my Disco1 with some help from J.D. the viscous fan on mine was a nightmare.  When putting the belts back on, place the power steering one over the front reel to the middle, put onto the pas pump and then force onto the main drive.  It isn't easy, on mine the pas pump hit the block before it went down to the closest adjustment, making it very much a two person job.

If you need, I've the part numbers on my desk at work, but surprisingly enough I was able to get a full-set from Halfords and they were all the right ones.

Good luck,

Viscous fan has to come off I'm afraid, and as the pas one is the one at the back, you have to take them all off to get to it.  That was the case with my V8 3.9.

I take it these we are talking about V belts and its the setup with 3 or 4 belts depending wheter you have air con or not.

You shouldn't have to remove the fan or pulleys to fit the belts. The belts can be eased rounf the fan and to get them on pulleys that are a little to far apart to just push on then you can get them on by first fitting over one pulley and then rotate the belt + pulleys whilst feeding the belt on to the second pulley like the chain chaning gears on a bicycle.

Also just because belts are squeeling doesn't mean they necisserily need replacing, quite often all then need is tightening.

having done it to mine, I would offer advice of taking off the viscous fan.  If it has been a while since the belts were changed, some of the adjusters wil be really quite tricky to get to.  The more space you have for your arms then the less likely you are to get hurt, well that's my view and for the £7 a fan spanner will set you back it was worth it in my book.

Where abouts are you??

the belt that is slipping is the one thats for the power steering, i only have 3 belts, no Air Con, as far as i can see only the belt for the altenator and fan are adjustable.

so are you saying its possible to feed the belt over the fan to get is past the fan belt? the pas belt pulley is behind the fan belt pulley.

im going to give it a go tonight as i want to sort it for this sunday so i can take to Barn Hill Farm Sunday.

im based in North London, Colindale. near Hendon.

Just to let you know all belts changed, didnt need to remove the fan took about an hour to do. just undid the pulley wheels slipped the belts off. put new belts on and did the pulley wheels ups.

easy! no she is purr like a cat and no longer squelling like a pig. job done. just have to sort the leaking rear diff, i had taken it through deep water a few weeks ago, should of stopped by now?

nice one - I did find on mine a similiar thing to watch for though.  Once the loudest squeek or rattle is gone you can start to hear the other twenty
