turn key ... nothing
« on: June 26, 2008, 22:27:54 »

i have noticed this before but never really thought about it much, sometimes the 90 ( 200tdi ) when i turn the ignition key lights up all the ignition lights but doesnt even make any effort to start, but normally the next time i turn the key it starts perfectly,

today i got to the place i was giving my dad a lift to and waited while he was inside and then went to start it and nothing at all no matter how many key turns, you hear the click of the relay and see the ignition lights and thats it,
we suspect the starter solanoid, is it part of the starter motor on a landy or is it seperate? how hard are they to change, or do i have the wrong thing in mind?

its abit disturbing as im spost to be setting off to manby tomorrow  :-.

cheers kieran

Hit it with a hammer :)

Check the connections on the starter motor and the ones on the starter solenoid..

If the solenoid is clicking and the earths are good then the starter is possibly sticking..Give it a smack wiv an hammer..sometimes frees em up for a while..

See you over the weekend hopefully :)
Hit it till it breaks then hit it some more !

Hiya mate..

Well my cable ties finally snapped :( although it has lasted well over a year....The stainless grill kept eating itsway through them..

However on the up side I found that my bonnet release cable has "welded" itself to the outer casing so if I pull the the lot from inside the cab it all works :(

I looked at bonnet pins and I've got a couple of rubber catches somewherebut they dont seem to sit right with the chequer plate on the wings..maybe I'll have another look at it one day

Check all your earth wires, especially the big ones. ie the one from the battery to the chassis and the one from the chassis to the engine. This has happened to me several times, and in the end it has always been the earth somewhere.
If theres a harder way to do it I`ll find it!!

Sounds like a starter motor to me won't be the solenois as you said you can hear it working all that does is engage the pinion gear into the flywheel, maybe a bad resistance on the contacts to the starter coil is the problem as this coil has a higher current.

somtimes it will throw the gear in but not make the connection for the motor. If it wasnt the solonoid it wouldnt be such an intermittant problem.

Turn the key once and nothing and turn it again and it works is classic solonoid symptoms.
