our TD5 usually gets 25-30 with 200hp running through it. when you do get it i would stay away from autos(something wrong with sensor positions) i would also look into silicone hoses and the egr removal, the hyclone things have also definitively been proven to work on them (by me and my dad) we also have a few bits(well, allot) floating around like 4 18" allots with general grabber at2 on them we also got a 2" lift kit and 2 or 3 ecu replacements(chipped)
over all i rate them very highly.

also, they are not fitted with difflocks, they took the lug off of the gear boxes to mount them on after 2000 so if your doing alot of offroading get a pre 2000.

IIRC, the last few D2's had difflock re-instated !

I've had an auto D2 for a few years now, it's now done over 108000 miles and the 'box is still fine - regular autobox oil and filter changes has kept it sweet (although LR don't recommend changing the autobox oil until the 80k service !)

Other things to check :-

do the sunrooves leak ?
do all the toys work, leccy mirrors, windows, sunrooves (on some versions), central locking etc
does the ACE work - active cornering enhancement
does the SLS work  - self levelling (rear) suspension, if the SLS pump runs (with the engine on) for a long time its an indication that there is an air leak in the pipework, or one/both of the airbags is leaking - about £100 for one bag, easy to change at home.

Is the coolant nice and clean - look for signs of coolant being expelled from the expansion tank, as this may indicate that the head gasket is starting to go.

If you've got anymore questions please ask, I'm sure one of us will be able to answer.

It's 2000 X plates i'm looking at  TBH I thought they all had a centre diff lock  if it has will it be marked on the gear knob ?The ACE am I right in thinking if it's working the truck should be firm in the corners without much body roll ? SLS could you poss tell roughly how long is ok ?
Sorry for all the Q's it's just i've never really had anything to do with Disco's apart from doing some warranty trim work on one when they 1st ever came out

I had a W plate - and that did not have difflock, but it did have the all-important 'spigot' on the top of the transfer case, which meant that I could have fitted one of the after-market kits to enable me to use the difflock - but, I never really found a need for it, the traction control got me out of most problems............all other 'situations' required a tow

SLS - when you say how long, do you mean the extra height gained when you press the magic button ? IIRC, SLS was normally only fitted as standard to 7 seaters (all 7 seater D2's should have SLS - was part of the homologation), it was a factory extra on the 5 seaters. SLS is not like the air-sus on P38's, from the button on the dash you can only raise the rear of the vehicle an extra few inches, press the button again and normal height is resumed. You can pay through the nose for an extra button on the key fob, and that gives you the facility to reduce the ride height by a few inches - in theory, to enable you to hook up a trailer/caravan whose hitch is lower than the height of your tow hitch. In both cases, once you drive off and get to 20mph, the vehicle automatically returns to the standard ride height.

ACE - yes, find a quiet roundabout or decent bend and see how the body doesnt roll. A vibrating noise when the ACE activates can be down to a stone lodged behind the ACE valve block, which sits up beside the O/S chassis rail - right under the drivers door.

the diff lock was an optional extra. my dad payed £250 for one from ashcroft. as i say, we have many parts including a full air system. the CDL is not essential but it IS better than the traction controle if you have both it will be almost unstopable! major advantage in winch challenges as you can essentially enter in class1 (winch, no after market traction aides) and go places everyone else cant! the ace is a very efficient system it is another advantage the D2 has, you can lift it as much as you want(provided the ace rods are extended enough) maintain good road manners but because it all decouples you get massive amounts of axle travel off road with out removing anti roll bars.

I just replaced the injector loom in mine - you take the rocker cover off, and it's all so easy..........until you come to put the rocker cover back on, the thick rubber gasket is a pig to get to sit in place - right at the back, there's a big bit of rubber that seals a big 'open hole' in the head casting - mine has been leaking oil from here for some time, the little sound-deadening panel that bolts to the back of the head (and is virtually impossible to remove) is quite soaked in oil...........this may be where the oil is coming from on the ones you've looked at - the gasket is about a tenner, you just need patience to replace it !

Funnily enough I just replaced the cam cover gasket on my TD5 Defender. 105k miles, year 2000. It was leaking a little. The rubber gasket was noticeably harder than the new one.. I guess they harden with age and start to leak a little.. Same place as yours Sweety, at the cast hole at the back and a little on the right hand side.

I was wondering if anyone had a pic of this Spigot or a link to a pic so I know what to look out for as I'd like to have the option to fit CDL if I felt I needed it or when funds allow :D

Ah, but you can see - although you need to take the inside of the truck apart, but you can feel for it from underneath. Hopefully this link to a page on Ashcrofts website will show a piccie of a LT230 x-fer box, the spigot is the little thing sticking up just above and to the right of the front output flange - there's a far better description on the website.

Many thanks for that Jimbo :PAll I will have to do  know is go out feeling up transfer boxes to see if they have a type of nipple on them
I might go for just a 5 seater as the 6&7th seats would be removed anyway to make way for my sound system :roll:Do the  5 seaters have the air suspension ?I might be wrong here but i'm sure i've read in the past that the air set up can be replaced with good old springs :?
Anyway thanks again to all of you's as you have been a great help with all of my Q's no matter how silly they may have been

the higher spec ones were fitted with air and yes you can ditch the air...reletiveley straightforward task. but taking the gearbox/t/box out is apparentley a little more difficult on a d2, i dont know why but thats what i was told. disco parts also do the CDL kit dont buy the solinoid activated one as i hear they jam!
