spare wheel mount
« on: July 04, 2008, 13:20:53 »
I bought a new spare wheel mount on ebay coz the orginal is very rusty. Incidentally the fella selling them is advertising them as Defender mounts but they're the same part as discos.

I've still got the rusty old one, and I was half wondering if you could mount it on the bonnet and have a second spare?? Is this stupid or has it been done?

If its do-able I might buy a second new mount and go for it. My only real thought was that it might get in the way of a clear view of the road ahead, especially when going down a steep drop (but you can see nowt then anyway)...

Not every problem can be solved with duct tape, and it's exactly for those situations we have WD 40

These two threads should help you decide on that option

Thanks Hobbit. Read them, don't think I'll bother any further. I'll just sling a second spare in the boot with the shovel and hi-lift. Cheers

You can get a mounting to put your hilift on the spare wheel mount (with the spare wheel). Wizardbilt sells them on Ebay, very well made and at a sensible price.

It'd be a menace on a Disco - Defender/Wolf bodywork is narrower (hence the wheelarch extensions) so the spare wheel doesn't project a huge amount beyond the body. Would do disturbing things to the handling too with that hefty extra weight high up on one side!

If i'd be looking to add another spare wheel, i'd look to the double wheel rack on the rear  :-k
If at first you don't succeed, try, try, then reverse over it...

Well by the end of the month I'll have the body lifted and a hole in my spare bonnet to see how far i can sink the wheel in, then I'll post pics.
