Oil coming out of intercooler pipes

dont know where to start. Bought my defender 200 tdi about 4 months ago. Noticed there was no air filter so promptly fitted one. about a month later oil started leaking out of intercooler pipes. I noticed an oil catch tank in the engine bay(not plumbed in) asked the bloke about it and he told me it wasnt needed as a recon turbo, head and new breather had been fitted. so i hoped he had just forgotten to clean out the intercooler. i did this and all the pipes thoroughly. about a month later same problem. a boost gauge is fitted and its running up to 0.8 bar. Smoke screw seems to have been correctly adjusted as i get black smoke on full throttle. I really want to get this engine sorted cos it drives really well. incidently when you take off oil filler cap there seems to be a fair bit of pressure, same at the dipstick.

Breather system could have a blockage/restriction, so check the cheapest first :)
Other possibilities are oil leaking out of the turbo shaft on the cold side, head gasket leaking compression into the engine (cylinder to camshaft side of the engine usually), or piston blow-by (stuck or worn rings)

I had this also...

It seems that on the 300tdi, the breather for the rocker cover goes into the air intake pipe just after the exit of the filter housing. Oil was coming from the breather, though the intercooler, turbo, and exhaust manifold.


I cleaned it all out, and it seems ot be ok now, but i would imaging it would re-appear at some point.

Cant seem to find any blockage, and breather was replaced about 3 months ago. If i did a compression test would this indicate rings/bores being the problem? No idea what kind of readings i should be getting?? but assuming the guy i bought it from is telling the truth and the turbo and head have been rectified, then this would point to worn pistons/rings/bores??

mine has always done it

cleared all the breathers etc and mine did have a blown head gasket (sounded like a steam train if you took the filler cap off when the engine was running)

even after changing the HG it still has oil in the air filter housing and has done for the last 10,000 miles

unless your throwing out plumes of blue smoke i wouldnt worry about it

Mate, i have an oil slick running right down the lhs of the chassis and now its flicking up onto the tail gate. I do desperately need to sort it out!!!!
