Been a while since I wired and amp but if memory serves the JVC headunit I used had a blue wire from the back of the head unit specifically for turning the amp on (and probably volume control as well?). Certainly I would expect a headunit with a pre out to have an amp control wire as well, check the manual for the headunit to be sure which one it is.

Does the base spec discovery use an electric (as in up/down with the ignition key?) ariel or just the higher spec models? If your just after an ariel that will go up and stay up then that would be the simplest option

the electric one used to come on when u turned the stero on. i think a rubber one may be a better bet , do like the radio on when light off roading .

yh think that blue wire is the one i need

There's a simple fix to the aerial getting hit by branches - just fit a switch between it and the radio so you can keep it lowered. The aerial has a fixed live and one switched by the radio, a manual switch in the latter will solve the problem.

For the feed wire to swich on an amp most head units use a blue wire but some have one wire for an elec aerial which you can tap into or some like my sony have 2 wires 1 for amp switch on & one for elec aerial. If you get stuck let me know as I'm sure i still have the wiring diagrams for sony, jvc & kenwood head units if it's of any help :D

picked this up a while ago you will have to make sure its right tho'

300TDI Discovery Stereo Wiring

wire colour chart:

B=BLACK.
P=PURPLE.
G=GREEN.
R=RED.
K=PINK.
S=GREY,
L=LIGHT.
U=BLUE.
N=BROWN.
W=WHITE.
O=ORANGE.
Y=YELLOW

L denotes lighter colour i.e. LG indicates light green as opposed to G = green being a darker colour.

Left front speaker +(positive) BW = black with White tracer
Left front speaker - (negative)BN = black with Brown tracer
Right front speaker +(positive) BK = Black with PINK tracer
Right front speaker - (negative)BR = Black with Red tracer
Left rear speaker + (positive) BY = Black with Yellow tracer
Left rear speaker - (negative)BO =Black with Orange tracer
Right rear speaker +(positive) BG = Black withGreen tracer Right rear speaker -(Negative) BU = Black with Blue tracer

SUB was originally in its own connector two wires RED and BLACK with a shield around it and black sheath over outside.
I connected mine to a phono jack plug and plugged into an amp out socket on the back of my head unit
Red to centre pin
BLACK to the outer you need to ground the shield to the head unit casing.
Sub is powered by its own amp which is built in to the tailgate and is powered from the ignition circuit so will switch on and off with the key at the first stage.

And please buy a decent camera.
