Scrap metal prices
« on: July 10, 2008, 13:00:01 »
Just wondered what price steel (as in steel car wheels) was fetching at the moment?
Anyone know?
Cheers, Nathan.

I would hazard a guess at around £100 per tonne. We took 1.25 tonnes of cast iron in a few weeks ago and came out with £240!

I'd heard that copper had topped £4000 per tonne recently

I just 'weighed in' 4x steel wheels, 7x15.

Perhaps cause of constantly hearing about short supply and excessive demand I expected to get a little more than £5 for them, they weighed in @ 46kg.
Cheers, Nathan.

That'd be just over £100/tonne..   which is about right.

When we were there waiting to get in with our cast iron, they were moving hot water tanks around. Stacked about 10 on the front of a fork lift. And they were contantly back and forth with loads

when i last took my scrap down, i done 2 runs and on the 3rd i only had about £40 worth on the van and coz i had been twice he already had my unloaded wieght, so he told me to stay off the scales and he would work it out from the previous weight,
i forgot to mention i had about half a tonne for a job i was on the way to, so i got paid for that aswell so a real good day was had, haha

As a gas fitter I used to be allowed to book out a box of copper fittings from our stores when I needed some for a job, now I have to account for every single fitting and every bit of copper tubing that I use on a job

its good that we canpossible make money from scrap. but unfortunatly there has been stories of people going into houses being done up and being stripped of the wire and pipes, drain covers go missing even whole bus stops!! and the scrap man taking them! but the worst (well in my opinion anway, dont know bout anyone else) is when they are nickin stuff like comerative plates from grave yards etc. i just think thats a different kind of low..

just my opinion :)

I'm fed up with the scrap collectors, they are a pain in the backside.

They will steal anything, we have had tractors straded with batteries stolen, to churches and houses stripped for lead and copper.

One of the thieving gits died just by us last year.
He was stealing from a building site and grabbed a live cable. Frazzle frazzle, shock, dead.

We were checking the prices on-line for mag-alloy, the scrap we have at work was then weighed......£61,000.  We also have a 1.5tonne section of aircraft that holds the wings made of titanium!! Oh I wish it would fit in the disco!!!
