..have you not just answered your own question??

the old "omlette/break egg" situation seems to be apt here....

Does your truck need anymore weight?

I'd think you're not getting much by the way of mpg as it is

Chequer plate on any vehicle is WRONG unless it actually needs to be there to reinforce a panel so that you can stand on it.

Judging by that immage you prefer a kevlar based lining and bullet proof glass?

How many parts of a land rover need a extra skin of checker plate to stand on anyway? The old series LRs at home never had checker plate on them but walked all over, usually as a handier alternative to a step ladder.

I don't have a problem fitting it on wingtops if you have a roofrack fitted. But beyond that there really isn't any use for the stuff.

mask the sticker up,
spray some black paint on & sprinkle in some sand

Viola one grippy surface to stand on & keeps your sticker

Or

Do as normal people do & climb up the ladder at the back

I do think black chequerplate can look pretty good on the lower body of a Disco 1 - not unlike the graphics applied to some XS-spec examples but with the advantage that it looks a lot better than scraped paintwork.

Why chequerplate? Why not just black anodised ally sheeting?? It's not like anyones going to walk on the side of your disco  and if they are it's going to have passed the point of worrying about a few dents.

I like the bling factor of chequer plate on the lower body panels and bonet  :afro:

Looks soooo much better than scabby flappy door skins

And having it on the bonet stops your passenger from slipping off while trying to attach the tow rope while in deep water

Again it's personal choice and mine is I like it

However it can be overdone

i was thinking like thick rubber in matt black ( like that 90/110 load bay linear stuff) then the bearmach lower door protecter stuff pealing off put me off abit.

 :-k

yes i do stand on the bonnett alot now . roof rack isnt on at the moment try to work out mpg improvement and not alot more if any by  my reckoning plus 0.5 at best

I agree it can be overdone, I just think it would look better than plain ally sheet on the lower body.

Mines really just for practicallity,

My bonnet one doesn't really help with the roof bar glare even though it is matt black, it is very handy to use to get up to the roof rack though and the side chequer plating helps clean up the scabby bits on the doors and gives me something to re-attach the rear wing to the mud guard stay with.
