We use something called "Tee wash" i believe, applied with a rag and wiped over newly galvanised steel prior to painting.

red oxide?

No, not even red oxide or zinc phosphate primers will cover new galv properly!

Think if its a paint you are after it may be called an "etch primer" but not certain. As i said where i work they use a solution to wash down the galv prior to painting ;)

Cheers

T wash is the name we use it on panels for the big water tanks you see on industial estates ..

you can wipe it on with a rag if the galv is smooth but if it's rough it's best to use a pump sprayer on fine mist (use mask ) because a rag will leave fibers on the rough stuff...

and wear gloves as if can be absorbed through the skin.
