what's that noise coming from the disco???

Honestly, all three of my landrovers have gone wrong in a big way in the weeks leading up to our Uk family holiday.

First 110, TD engine went, V8 110 transfer box went and now there is a horrible speeed related thuding coming from underneath the disco just before we head off again. Dropped it round to the local village garage on the way home last night and the young un round there popped it up the ramp, played around a bit and decided the problem was with the front diff (off the top of his head suggested 4 hours work to replace and about £200 for the part). He said there was play with both prop shafts but at the front diff there was play, then it got stuck and then moved freely again. He also drained a liitle of the oil out of it which was quite dark and he reckoned it had metal particles in it (but when he showed me I could barely see anything).

What do you think guys - front diff or are there other suspects??

I've booked it in at an independent 4-wheeel drive specialists to be on the safe-side but as you can imagine, I'm quite worried about the bill and how it will impact on the family hols (no ice cream for the kiddies!!!).

Hello David, on the disco so I'd say it was sh*te.

There is always a fair bit of play in the front prop, not many disco don't have it, a diff can be picked up for £30-£50 and changing it involves undoing 4 bolts on the propshaft where it meets the diff, draining the diff, removind the half shafts in the axels, held in by 5 (I think) bolts in the centre of each wheel, and undoing the bolts that hold the diff to the axle.

Take it out, put new one in with new gasket or liquid gasket, put half shafts back in with nes gaskets, fill with oil, connect prop and away you go.

Total cost less than £100.

I'd try the 4x4 specialist mate.

.....and finally after being away for 8 days on business and generally busy I got back t this one.

glad I took all your advice and got it round to the 4 wheel drive specialist because being the good chaps they are they found out it was...a loose wheel!!! Seems like some pikey has been after mi alloys.

Anyway, I had a very small bill for the time they spent finding the problem and fixing it. Probably about what I've saved on liquid platinum, oh sorry I mean diesel, in the last two weeks.

I like a story with a happy ending. Now insted of having lots of no money to spend on that new diff the village garage said I needed I find I've got lots of no money to spend on mods or getting away in the landy. EXCELLENT!
