Why cant people use motorways properly
« on: July 16, 2008, 18:59:08 »
I was coming back from tottenham today just came of the A406 to get onto the M11 got up to my speed of 56 mph got in the correct lane when this dip stick pulled over to the middle lane and slowed down to 40 mph why i asked myself so I pulled behind him hopping that they might get the drift and pull back over to the first lane but did they no they stay in the middle lane doing 40 so I was flashing my lights blowing my horn and they just ignor me and sit there and as I am not allowed in the 3rd lane I under took him and get all this abuse from them for doing it only if they knew how many gears I went through just to get back up to speed again

you can get done for going too slowly as well as speeding on our highways, and 40 on a motorway is dangerous for a car

when you see a big frigging crane doing it you can see him and know he aint gonna change down and do a ton but when a  car pootles along doing 40 then ive little sympathy

the roads were built in the 60's and i believe some drivers still think they are in 60's traffic and speeds

Just out of interest if you find your job so infuriating why not do your blood pressure a favour and become a rabbit farmer?

A few kms of red and white cones with a couple of workers asleep in a yellow truck at the end normally gets the blood preasure rising!! You dont see that in Norfolk though........ we are all hardworking and like to keep the traffic moving.... unless you are driving a high powered sportscar, then we like to allow the morris minor a fair chance to keep up!

If a big lorry starts flashing their lights behind me I slow down just to annoy them even more then when they try and over take I will out accelerate them and if i get really annoyed by them I will pull in front of them again in the slow lane and slow down even more.

I under stand you drivers in your big lorries driver all over the place but sitting behind some one flashing your lights and blowing you horn is intimidation in a big lorry so you deserve all the abuse you got.
Thanks,

Sadly, undertaking him is possibly more of a "crime" than him tootling in the middle lane.

Blocking someone in?

If you had done it to me i'd have been on the hands free to the cops and your head office cos that is utterly appaling behaviour!

I was just going to say  , How can you complain about somebody not using the motorway properly then admit to ,,,,

tailgating .

road rage .

undertaking .

and driving at slow speeds to wind people up .

sorry but if I were behind you I'd be on the hands free to the rozzers reporting you  [-X

and I'll also say that a lot of your posts lately have been highway code related , well you want to try reading it

numpties driving slow are just a part of life deal with it , undertaking or intimidating them is far worse...and as a profesional driver you should know this...

Mr Henrylesley

you say that you are a professional driver. You then go onto mention talking the mickey out of car drivers, blocking in .....

well you dont sound very professional to me.

If somebody like you worked for me as a driver I would sack them.

Undertaking "can" be perfectly legal!!

If you are maintaining a consistant speed on the inside lane and there is an eejit driving slower than you in the middle lane then you can legally undertake!

its the plonkers that start on the outside lane and come all the way to the inside to undertake cos they can't get past on the outside that the Police look for!

Henry, from a professional driver to another: Chill, man!!!!

And Crazymac is perfectly right. As long as you are maintaining a regular speed (and that speed is well below the limit), it is not considered as undertaking, simply keeping up with the traffic.

The only thing with doing that barry make sure the truck is on his own and not have someone following him as them they both will block you in and slow right down trust me when I was with mlt in mildenhall we had this donkey in a bmw doing just that so we blocked him in for 20 miles

Dissapointing attitudes there chaps ... no care for your safety and of those around you.

as yet another professional driver I have to agree with your second statement, and as mentioned Henry should've just carried on tavelling at his constant speed in the inside (not slow) lane and let the numpty look after himself.

unfortunately can't agree with your first statement, it's complete pi**ocks doing this kind of thing on the roads that can and does lead to accidents in which people actually die, again unfortunately, it's more often than not some poor innocent s*d who had nothing whatsoever to do with the original incident.

**Soapbox mode on**

Middle lane hogs really do my head in... there is a simple formula...

I'm getting closer to the guy in front = Move out a lane
I'm getting further away from the guy in front = Move in a lane
I'm staying the same distance from the guy in front = Move in a lane

For me it's another symptom of the limited learning we give new drivers in this country. Imagine for a minute... training a prospective brain surgeon to operate on a knee... then signing his chitty and leaving him to it!

We should see learners on our motorways so that they can experience the problems and practice the good behaviours.

Part of my job involves attending RTC's and they are nice when somebody has died.   :'( One of my fellow workmates was hit from behind by a artic driver in the outside lane on cruse whilst reading a map.    The IPV truck heavly laidened with bright flashing amber lights was protecting grass cutters on the A12. He had the cushion down which prob saved his life, the tractor drivers  and the mad artic driver's lives  too.
A message to all road users............. SLOW DOWN , CHILL AND ARRIVE SAFELY

what i will say is that those of you who have wound each other up (the truckers vs the non) put yourself in each others shoes for a week then come back and comment.

tis very easy to wind up a trucker if hes flashing you,  Or its very good intimidating a car in a truck

swap roles THEN see how you feel about it.

I do agree that it would be good to get learners onto the motorways to learn, but not all of them are near Motorways!

To get to a Motorway from here is 45 minutes! so thats an hour and a half lesson before even taking driving time on there into account!

I do drive trucks and transits and vans as part of my job as a transport manager (admitedly not as much as I used to as I now fly a desk mostly) and I stand by my post above.....we have the usual " driven well phone 0845 ######" on the back of our vehicals and If I got a call telling me one of our drivers was doing what you did they wouldn't be on of our drivers for long...

Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake.

I used to wonder what the problem was with HGV drivers until I went on a short jaunt with my stepson who is a HGV driver. In a car you have the ability to accelerate out of trouble, in a HGV, you don't - pretty simple.

For HGV's entering a motorway, I will try and move over to allow them to join the motorway. Yes, I have priority but why be a git with someone who has to drive for a living and can't accelerate to 70mph. The only folk I don't make allowances for are the idiots that join the motorway at 45mph and expect to be let in

Poor lane discipline is a major problem on the motorway and we NEED a larger Police prescence on the motorway to enforce this. Speed Cameras only show that you are speeding at a particular point. They don't show that you were overtaking some prat who decided to put his (or usually her) foot down as you were overtaking. It isn't difficult to get to 85 mph in a situation like that

Cheers
John
