The ones i have seen and have been reliable uses a Electric Hydraulic pump a ram and a spoolvalve. One of the boys in the BORDC uses this set up on his trialler and works well.... This is the way I'm going so the 2 systems are independant. Using the other method of using the existing box and PAS sytem could leave you with no steering if it developed a problem...
It's not all the time I'd use the rear steer so being able to "switch" off the rear would suit me better.....
Theres a heap of companies on ebay who do the rams/spool valves which in my opinion would be perfect. It'll be trial and error till i get i right i suppose.

Good luck with yours and let me know how you get on....

to be road legal it neesd to be ram assisted
not fully hydraulic....another words it needs a mechanical link between steering wheel and steering arm

by plumbing into existing lines you can just add a ram to assist the steering, however you will need to fit a larger pas pump as the origional does not have a high enough flow + pressure to maintain a descent amount os steering response

so another words you'll end up nocking that old lady over that you turned to avoid but nothing happend because the reponse time of the steering is like trying to stop a supertanker at full steam ahead withing the stopping distance of a car doing 30mph....it just aint gonna happen

ideally you want a large rod size with a little cy bor size, so another words the volume inside is very little, so this helps with steering response
you will need to fit a bigger resavoir as the current is way to small
preferably a oil cooler
uprate steering arms and beef up steering mounts
make a super stron anchor point that isnt gonna rip your chassis off
change steering drop arm to a pitman arm off a disco ( easier to anchor ram then )

i  really really really wouldnt suggest fitting hydro assist to a road vehical as it has so many drawbacks
but the biggest thing of all is, your going to end up in a wall or killing someone as when its all set-up properly the steering is very sensative ant twitchy

im doing it to mine now as and when i get abit of spare time, thats aswel as trying to fit a 24v alternator so i can run my 12v motors on 24v , modify my wings abit inside oh and fit a center winch argh too little time in the day  :(

seriously though think long and hard about it, you should have my mobile still, so give me a buzz if you want to chat about it
make sure your box isnt cooked and your pump isnt nackerd if your having rubbish steering, as my box was goosed and i couldnt turn the wheel offroad until i fitted a new one, i can now turn my steering with my palm offroad, its just when its nose down in ditches i cant...but who can
oh, another thing.....fit a little oil cooler too it, it'll love you forever  ;)
