Fuse's keep blowin!
« on: July 23, 2008, 13:20:42 »
I have a slight problem I can't work out. Last week my rear wiper stopped working about half way through its cycle. I have taken the wiper motor apart before as some of the linkages had come apart inside and I thought this was the problem. So I took it apart again and put it all back together and put it back on to find it now keeps blowing the 20amp fuse. it will run through a couple of cycles before blowing it (ie down up down) If I operate the air con and the sunroof which are on the same fuse its ok then when I switch on the rear wiper after a couple of cycles it blows the fuse. If i do not take the wiper motor off and move the shaft to a different position it will blow the fuse streight away, if I move the shaft it will then work for a couple of cycles before blowing it again  :-k

Logic is telling just replace the whole wiper motor for a new one...... but I don't get why it will work for a couple of cycles and then blow

Electrics are my weakest point am I missing something or is there just a fault with wiper motor and it can't be fixed and just get a replacement!

Thanks all

Jonny

You've got a short somehwere.
it could be the motor or try looking at the wiring up and around the motor.
You can rule out the wiring if you run a fused direct cable to the motor and if all works well then there is a fault with the wiring,
if it still blows the fuse then it is the motor!

Good luck.

Well thanks for all the advice I ended up going for a new (secondhand of E-bay £25) wiper motor, found out when I got the new one that I had put the old one back together incorrectly which was creating the short and blowing the fuse. For any one who is striping down and serving a wiper motor..... worth doing as a good grease keeps them running smooth, the small plastic "cap" goes on the plastic drive wheel side of the motor and the plastic washer goes on the main shaft side of wiper motor, both are held in place by the cover. It will become clear when you take it apart!!!

thanks again for your help

Jonny
