quiery on td5 turbo
« on: July 24, 2008, 21:59:24 »
On the top of the td5 turbo is what looks like a vaccum unit with an adjustable threaded bar to the back of the unit.

What is it and why would it need adjusting

i dont have a td5 so im guessing here could it be the turbo waste gate actuator.if you are adjusting boost from the turbo for more power you wind the rod in or out not sure which way though.im sure that someone who knows what they are talking about and with more experiance will give you a better idea or tell me im wrong :lol:if i were you i wouldnt touch it as if it is the waste gate its been set up by the factory.

the wastegate governs the level of boost your turbo suplies on a 300 tdi i think that its set to 13 psi or around that on a td5 i dont know,if you were to increase it you will get more power as the boost is raised but it also raises engine temp and if you do to much you can melt pistons and things like that.you also have to adjust the fueling to suit it as well i think.Im not that experienced in this field so i tend to leave things like this well alone until i have done some serious research.PLEASE dont touch it on my say so as i know nothing about td5s and you can really mess things up,if you have a look at a firm called twisted performance theres a whole host of things they do to get the most from your engine ok they are not cheap but when you weigh up what an engine rebuild and new turbo will cost you its money well spent.one thing i would do if i were to tinker with it would be to get yourself an accurate boost gauge plumbed in and make small adjustments but mark its original setting first, with that said i dont know how much boost you can safely gain and remain reliable im sure one of the big boys will let you know soon hope this helps mate sorry i cant give you anything concrete to work with best of luck!!

So what would happen if i did adjust it

The chances are that is you did adjust it, and did nothing else, that your ECU would sense an overboost and go into limp mode to prevent any damage to the engine.

What you can do however, is to add a little box of electrickery into the equation that overrides this function.  I've done this on mine and upped the boost by a bit  ;)  I didn't do it myself though. Speak to Gary at Td5Alive, he knows much about this stuff . . . . .

Our regular poster and diesel tuner 'Porny' might be able to offer some sage advice, too.  ;)

Nice chap with it, if a little quiet of late.

i wrote out a big chunk of infor for you as we have had 4 maps on our TD5 but mud club frozee up on me(been doing it alot) and i couldnt post it......which was annoying! but my advice is get a rover com map, that is the best one we have had. we do have an allisport chip the magic box for sale if you need. ultimatley we are running 25PSI the engine seems to be fine with it.
if you want to know more just ask
