Tinted Windows

Hi All
Anybody know what the law is on tinted side windows front and rear. I've been told that there is no problem with the back ones, but can not have tints on the fronts :huh:
Has anyone had problems with tints?

as you say really mate,

as dark as you like on the back,just dont touch the 3 front windows,if ya get stoped they ither tell you to remove them,or pull them off at the road side :shock:

It depends on the darkness of the tint. You can be nicked if the front door and windscreen windows are too dark. My new Passat has really dark rear door and tailgate windows but the front doors and windscreen are much lighter. Its the 4x4 version BTW. Not a mud plugger (thats what the hybrid id for) but should get me up our steep drive in winter.

Car Window Tinting Legal Requirements in the UK

Vehicle & Operator Services Agency (VOSA) Statement

The UK Road Vehicles (Construction & Use) Regulations 1986 Act - as amended specifies the minimum levels of light that must pass through the windscreen and front side windows.

The specifications are:
a) Motor Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1985
b) The light transmitted through the windscreen must be at least 75%.
c) The front side windows (to either side of the drivers’ head) must allow at least 70% of light to be transmitted through them.

If the glass is tinted to a point whereby it lets through less light, the vehicle does not meet legal requirements.

Saw a Police Camera Action style programme where a traffic unit made a woman in a new Rangie tear a strip out of her front tints. Logic being that she would fully remove it at home.

i saw that police camera action programme, made me chuckle  :lol:

my mate has a american van with a very slightly tinted winscreen which apparently is legal, personally i wouldnt do it ut your choice

Nope: pre 1985 you have to have at least 70%.

My Disco has black all around and a grey windscreen, never had a problem.

If your front side windows are tinted/blacked out, the police will stop you if they see you and it will fail the MOT.

Hmmm...how's this for a theory...you can legally buy window tint by the roll....you can legally buy window tint in pre-cut kits...you can legally take your vehicle to have professionally tinted windows fitted...by this reasoning, surely it then becomes legal to drive around with it on?????

If it wasn't legal, just for arguments sake, how do stretched limos' of any variety get through an MOT?....as assuredly, they aren't all less than 3 years old!...

I have just driven my new toy back from London, with tinted windows on the back and sides...passed a multitude of police cars, marked or otherwise, and no-one batted an eyelid....

...so just to concur the earlier post, a 30% tint on the front and a 70% tint on the back IS perfectly legal to both fit and drive around with....if I get pulled and prosecuted otherwise, I'll let you know  :D

P.S....LSP dear boy, could you possibly clarify on the matter  :police: :)

Yes you can buy the tint stuff, yes there are some tinters that will do it for you, but i bet you'll never get a bill for having it done, the fines they would incur are huge...... it's illegal, simple, doesn;t mean people don;t do it though.....

Don't forget, your windows already have a degree of tint anyway, so to you can't put a 25% tint on it and except 75% to get through.

When it's sunny I wear sunglasses. When it goes dark, I take the sunglasses off so I don't crash into things!

Do drivers with tinted front/side windows wind the windows down at night?

That link has surely answered all the questions? It is illegal to have a excessively tinted windows and it gives a reason why it's not a testable item at MOT stations.

You'll find that window tinters will have the important words on all documentation - something like 'For show use only' or 'It is the responsibility of the car owner'. Same applies with show number plates and black visors on bikes.
