I like the roadbooks that TOR do

I was keen on LROI, but after a few recommendations I swapped to TOR. They just seem a good deal more relevant to the average laner with more almost-stock vehicles featured.

In my order of preferance;

'LRM'
Bought since #1
The best columnists (Elson, Floyd, Crawthorne)
Good features, not overbearing

'LRO'
Bought since the first year of publication.
Used to be better (when Elson, Floyd & Taylor & Morrison wrote for it.
Possibly the best features, as it has a big publishers budget behind it

'LRW'
Bought since #1
John Carroll - what a nice man (remember his days of 'Back Street Heroes')
Northern Notions was a great irregular feature
Possibly a more nothern bias than the other titles (not a bad thing )
Some good project vehicles

'LRE'
Bought since #1
The best for history/word perfect facts, as James Taylor is a renown motoring historian (Rover in particular)

As for other motoring titles I partake of?

'Classic American'

Still got the first few issues hanging about, when it also featured trucks, guitars, boots, music & jeans, etc........
I might buy it 4 -6 times a year

'Top Gear'
Depends on cover features, or articles seen on the index page.

'Practical Classics'
Not as stuffy as the other classic mags, good fun.

'Classic & Sportscar'
I pick a few copies up at work from time to time, as a Lotus Elite owning Consultant brings them into his clinics waiting room, & I 'borrow' them

Richard A Thackeray
Defender 110Td5 'Heritage Gone, but not forgotten
Jaguar XKR; X88 JLT, also 'gone, but not forgotten'

Yorkshire Born & Bred, and proud of it.

'LRW'
Bought since #1
John Carroll - what a nice man (remember his days of 'Back Street Heroes')

Only mag I regulary buy is Back Street Heroes..

Is it still on sale?

Do you remember the days of JC editing?, the articles by people like Jim Fogg?, illustrations by Loiuse Limb (later sketching & writing intermittantly in 'LRW'), & that great cartoon 'Gruff'?

I get a subscription to LRM bought for me every birthday! But, I'm not convinced I would bother myself. Might buy it randomly otherwise.

Also have a subscription to TOR. Variety is the spice of life, as they say!

I buy TOR based on the road books and I buy any of the other mags if there is a modded of interesting Disco on the front but just lately I haven't bothered as they seem to have the same cars in all the mags just a few weeks apart and they are all rammed full of adverts so if you take out all the ads and the repeats you end up with half a dozen new pages a month

i can buy all or any of them infrequently depending on whether i have the money in my pocket and whether something takes my interest, i did have a subscription for lroi but seemed to find the features were cyclical and they started repeating themselves, all the mags do this from time to time i suppose but i stopped the subscription as i found myself reading the same sort of articles again the following year

The one I shall NEVER buy again is LRW. They blocked the ALRC national from having any trade stands due to their contract with Eastnor. So we had no spare parts at all sold at the rally this year.

I'm subscribed to TOR, when it comes to featured vehicles the land rover only mags are rather stagnent, though some of the other articles such as overland in the LR mags can be good reading. From time to time I still buy a LR mag, but its dependant on the contents.

About a year ago when bored I counted the pages of adverts in the mags just to confirm the obvious. Unfortunately I've misplaced the piece of paper with the results on but LRO had the highest with over 50% of the pages being adverts. TOR had the lowest % of pages as adverts, but with a lot of 4 or more to a page adverts and no multipage adverts there were probably getting on as many individal adverts in a TOR as the LRO.

I used to subscribe to LRO, but got bored with it and the massive amount of ads and product tests with no conclusions or hard recommendations. Suspect that may be because of all of the freebies they've had and they dont want to upset suppliers.
