Land Rover every time. Easy to work on. Parts are relitively inexpensive. My brother has a Land Cruiser which is great off road but Parts are really expensive.

I forgot to mention that they are also British. Which means they are obviously far superior to anything that comes from the land of the rising sun. Doesn't matter who owns Them. Tata

One of the things I've found out driving a shogun is that some parts are expensive but you very rarely have to change them

I've never had to change a brake disc — pads yes but not discs

Service kits and timing belts are comparitable

But I don't have to keep a stock of diffs or half shafts (though I ain't stupid enough not to)

Most parts for landies are cheap purely because there is a high turnover of them (and are now probably manufactured in China anyway)

This question comes up periodically.... do a search and you will find it several times!

The answer will always be...... It depends on what you need it for. And how you define 'best'.

well erm,

it all depends on if the 4x4 has mods!

see my patrol has ARB air locking diffs allaround,   iv pulled discos out the sticky stuff,  but i would of got stuck my self, if i did not have them,

but then again  parts are stupid, nissan have had to order me 6 wheel stud from japan, as they dont have any instock, that was 3 weeks ago, i hear there in spain at the moment

but i would not swap it for the world,   greenlaning in cream heated leather seats, climate control, and water tight

I wouldn't worry too much about this question, the original poster only put the question on here to stir up bad feeling between LR owners and Jap owners, it doesn't look like he has succeeded though.

Land Rovers are fantastic vehicles.... look around, they are everywhere :)

But.... I bought a Land Cruiser because they are more reliable..... sorry Landie owners but they are, as I feel you will agree. My spanner and socket days are over and I simply don't want to get under a car anymore or have grease under my finger nails so I bought the car I have. Look the world over, the Land Cruiser has moved in and sadly pushed the Land Rover out  I would prefer to have a British product as a world leader once again as when we try we can and do produce world beating products

If the LR was more reliable I would buy British every time.... to the LR company, please make them as reliable as the Japanese equivalent and you will recapture the market [-o<

with land rovers you know where you are, you know whats going to brak next, what is on its way out etc, and the chances are you still have a spare one in the garage off your last landy. anything could brake on my 90 and it couldnt bankrupt me.

With the jap stuff you buy it with the confidence it wont brake all the time, but you know that when it does it will pull your pants down. i would quite like a nissan patrol but i know if anything went wrong i would have to take it off the road while i saved up to fix it. usually i can bodge somthing up for the time being with the land rover, i fit new parts if i can afford but if not then im down the scrappys.

Not all jap stuff is up to it though, look at all the problems they keep having with L200's and navaras. cranks snapping etc.

Oh and if its not rated to tow 3500kgs then it cant be a proper 4x4 can it???

Let us consider one important issue. All cars are expensive to maintain. How that cost is met varies. Eg bits for a landy may be cheap but they seem to need plenty of them, and whilst jap's tend to need less bits they can be expensive one off's.

That said i feel happier with jap cos it's better in every way than that nasty tata rubbish!

now now, calm down.

Another thing to bear in mind is that most landys people off road are over 20 years old, so everything is generally on its way out, steering box, diffs, gearbox etc etc, but the few japs that you see about always tend to be mid 90's onwards.

This is what jap stuf looked like in 1991 (which is probs the average off roaded landys age)...

And how often do you see stuff like that about? Where did they all go? you see the odd rot box old fourtrak still on the road every now and again but thats about it. Must be because as soon as they start going wrong they become scrap, not worth fixing.

I"ve had a TDi300 90 and now have a Shogun. Jap motor is more reliable, comfier, quieter, warmer and doesn't leak but it won't go where the 90 would go. It's ok for laning and most playdays but the Landy was rough & ready and would go anywhere with no trouble.

So if you want a go anywhere vehicle it has to be a Landy but if you are getting to be an old fart like me that likes a bit of warmth and comfort then get a nice comfy Jap motor.

except when it breaks down!!!!! ................I would never, never have another land rover again, too expensive to buy in the first place,I could get an 04 plate shogun for the price of a 1999 LR 90 and i know which id rather have, they break too often, are uncomfortable as s**t,noisy, impractical and no good as an everyday motor for someone with a family............but oh yeah they are s**t hot offroad..............Id rather keep my Jeep anytime, sorry but for what i paid for it it would got me a 1981 series 3!!!!! and mine WILL go anywhere a landy will go

Not 'out of the box' it won't i had one, NOWT is as good unmodified.  I've had that truck 4 years and it has never not got me home.  Folk buy old landys and abuse them and don't maintain them the cry when they break.  They wouldn't touch a normal car half the age of the Landy they are moaning about.  That rig drove the Scandinavian coastline in 5 weeks and needed one fuse.......

yeah,id say that you were right when you say "out of the box" but really they are not THAT good they are only a 4x4 the same most others are,and yes, people wouldnt touch another car as old probably because they could get another car ten years younger for the same price!!!.....they are too over-rated and too expensive for what they are....sorry but its simple as that....... :)

I would say that Defenders are overpriced now - certainly around here. For the same money as a tatty Defender I could buy a good Disco and upgrades that would walk all over a standard Defender. The Disco is also a lot more comfortable.
