Front Diff Noise
« on: August 03, 2008, 16:45:15 »
God i hate my land rover "sometimes"

Driving along i can hear a noise sounds like a turning noise coming from the Front Diff. Gets faster as you go faster and so on. I know you should hear a noise of sorts but this is rather Metallic. sounds like a knocking noise as if something wasnt quite lined up or loose.

Another way to describe it is - sometimes when you change gear you can hear the pick up of slack - like this but on every rotation of the prop.

I havent long changed the pinion seal - not that i think i could have done anything wrong doing that! and i have greased up my props not so long ago.
I have also put a 200tdi engine and gearbox in it. But the diffs should be the same for an N/A

is there anything obvious i could check if i took the dif apart or is it all too complicated in there?

Drain yer diff oil, if theres heaps of swarf comes out with the oil its a sure indication something aint right. Remove the prop and see if there is movement on the pinion. Might explain why the seal went in the first place. I take it you have done the basic things like check wheel bearings, props UJ's etc??????

If in doubt get some help as it's a fairly big job to remove the front diff... Two heads are better than one and you don't want to go through all that work and find out its something silly!
