right a small update forr boss and others who are interested altho i do need some questions answered, i liked boss' design of rock sliders for 2 reasons, to look solid and most of all they are perfectly designed so i can mount my exterenal rollcage to them that i have been planning for aaaaaaages and promised id get good enough at welding before i attempted it i feel im pretty much there now sooooo........................ i willbe doing the rock sliders next tuesday once they are completed i will start on the external rollcage i will get a safari snorkel first in replacement of my home made one as they are much tighter to the vehicle what pipe size would people recommend thats my biggest question for strength but at the same time i dont quite want a scaffolding pole

Have a look at the pirate 4x4 website. There is an in depth discussion on tube material, strength, cost, cutting techniques etc. Its in a suspension article about making your own links but the info is still valid.

Also search the LR 4x4 site for rollcages, some of those lads have done excellent threads about making them in the past.

Good luck, I'll watch this one with interest   :-k

nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
if its the one im thinking of you will end up with flatspots in the tube!....some people seem to make them work but i for one cant!
i do have the alrc handbook somewhare which tells you all the tube specs, i think im right in saying o/d of the TUBE (not pipe) must be no less than 47mm with a wall of 1.7mm.....dont hold me to this i cant remember it all off of the top of my head. as for a snorkel, why dont you just move the one you have over into the windscreen, you will have yo take a chunk out of the bonnet and some vision will be lost but i would rather that than a £150 snorkel getting ripped off! the way i see it all the front mounted ones are vunerable! thanks for the props on the sliders BTW :D

If you want an unbreakable snorkel and your going to make a roll cage, you could do worse than have a look at Pikey Farmers beast. Cage and snorkel combined with tube as thick as your arm. Sorted.

Just been looking at the Insa Turbo Saharas and was wondering if anyone can comment on their road manners and wear rates? Quite fancy some M/Ts on mine next time but I've never had remoulds before and just a bit worried about the scare stories.

Also, is the speed rating ok? I realise my Disco is not likely to hit 106mph but I understand that insurers can be stroppy if you fit tyres that are lower rated than the originals.

35k is pretty good - was just thinking the price is half that of BFGs so if they last over half as long (and work as well) they're worth considering.

It's either them or Grabber AT2s, but I think I've done enough "training" on all terrains now and won't be relying on the tyres if I switch to M/Ts.

in respect to the question of what rubber to wrap your wheels  ive been using insa speacial tracks now for about a year and a half no problems and insa is probably the best out there for remoulds they have a large following and a good off and on road manner
As a youth I could run up and down stairs all day now I'm older it takes me all day just to walk upstairs

Having run 235/70/16 Amazon Technics for the last 18 months (they are similar in tread pattern to Insa Turbo Sahara's) I can say that they are good on the road, not too noisey, as well as off road too. However, I have decided to move up to Insa Turbo Special Tracks as everyone else in my club swears by them and went up a size or too to 265/75/16.
Then when I got them home I decided that they needed arches as well! More expense  ;)
These seem much noisier on the road, not been in the mud yet!!

Thanks chaps, I'll check the ratings in the manual and think about it.

I can't go to special tracks as I don't want to go larger than the 235/70s - I like being able to limbo under 2m height barriers!
