Got a new generator rated at 2.7kva. The bloke in the shop was trying to have me believe that to start a power tool you need 3 times it's rated power consumption. Eg my little jetwash is 1.6 kw so would need 4.8 to get it going. Is this right?

Not sure, but a drill with a variable speed trigger, will sure require a low starting ampage?

Again I'm not sure of the details but I think an electric motor needs a higher starting current to kick start it.

Yes and no.
A straight induction motor will take 3 times the current but then a decent generator will cope. They could be a bit slow starting with a longer run up but withing reason you should be OK.

Most generators only just about supply tyhe maximum rated out put so if its 10 amp this is on a good day, often nearer 9.5ish.
My little genny wont run my fancy drill as the voltage is too vague for the electronics in the acceleration system, which needs 220 minimum, genny kicks out 200-240 depending on load speed etc
My advise always buy one slightly bigger.
If I was buying a Jet was for use on a genny I would just buy a petrol jet wash, Makro did some last year for just over £100.
Remember its far harder to electrocute yourself with a petrol jet wash, but very easy with a generator!

had more in mind than just the jet wash stuff like grinders and drills and water pumps.
