Bulb keeps Blowing???????? Problem now Sorted 12/08/08
« on: August 11, 2008, 18:42:52 »
Hi All.

I'm confused........ the same brake light bulb keeps blowing around every 6 months, the passenger side one.

Anyone else have this problem?

Any ideas as to why it keeps happening?

Yep, 2000 Td5, left hand side,  I asked an auto electrician and he said the left hand side bulbs always blow quicker because the LHS of the vehicle always gets the rough drains, kerbs etc as you drive, whereas the RHS is pretty smooth.

I see where he is coming from but I find it hard to beleive.  And its only the brake light.  I suppose the brake light does get used the most!

Usually if one lamp keeps blowing its due to a bad connection somewhere.

I'm with Wizard, bad connection makes the bulb flash or flicker which causes thermal shock in the filament.

Also is the brake light separate from the tail light? my Cavalier was like this and I'd have to replace the brake light bulbs annualy.  A combined brake and tail pre-heats the filament when driving at night thus saving the filament.

you could try a 24v bulb, if it's a power serge there is less chance of it blowing. (they are not that much dimmer)

After speaking with hrh in the shout box last night I searched for the earthing problem he suggested, on removing the light clusters I found the driver side one to be damaged, the circuit board on the rear had been snapped by the ham fisted idiots who repaired that corner after a hit and run, I know it was them because of the filler dust all over the inside of the light cluster. I have replaced it now with secondhand one bought for £25 at my Local breakers. Fingers crossed I fixed it now.
Cheers.
