not reving

Hi, i have a 1990 disco 200tdi. it has been run on chip fat oil by the person who had it before me, when i rev it it revs to about 3000rpm then  starts to die down to about 2000rpm and it kicks out loads of blue smoke. is this just because it is running on chip fat oil or is something broke?

Top the tank up with clean diesel to dilute the cooking oil and change the fuel filter, that'll probably do the job, I don't think its anything serious.

i have taken as much of the chip stuff out and the fuel guage is reading below the red so will top it up with 25L of diesel and i think i should have a filter!

is it ok to run it on red diesel? with no modifications?

 Q.  is it ok to run on red diesel without mods.

 A.  Only if you fancy seeing the motor headed for the nearest crusher.

 Plenty of spot checks on fuel recently, get caught with red in the tank, and they impound the vehicle, then crush it. Not to mention the hefty fine for both the driver and suplier.

Unless its not on public roads.  On private land its fine, just ensure there is NO red in when its on the road.

Red diesel is no different to white diesel apart from the red die.

ye its an on the spot fine of £250 and if you can't pay that then they crush your car.

and no its not a road truck only offroad!

The red die is not the only difference ..

the chemical make up is different thats how they tell, not the colour ....

I agree with the top up with the dino and new filter that will give you a starting point..

Whatever you do, if you're gonna use it on a public road of any sort, even greenlanes, DO NOT, NOT, NOT use red diesel.

Check the fuel lift pump if a new filter and a tank of the proper stuff doesn't cure it. Those can cause engines to refuse to rev if they're faulty.

Once in the sytem the red dye is there for good, so if you intend to put it back on the road be careful.

Red diesel is often delivered by the same tanker, the dye being added at the point of delivery! whilst some manufacturers may put more additives in their road fuel (shell/esso/bp etc) red diesel is white diesel with dye in it.

It's all down to risk vs reward at the end of the day. In 17 years of driving I've never been dipped. I dont know anyone who's been dipped. Maybe it's where you live, where you drive etc. I'm damn sure a builders van covered in site logo's will be more likely to be dipped than my missus in the TDi Polo.

If I had been willing to risk it, running on red could have saved me about £100,000

all of my mates run there road cars and offroad cars on red because it costs about 40p as we are farmers. Also i dont know any one who has been diped i have also never see any one being diped.  but for me and my mates its worth running the cars on red as we save enough  money to buy a new car if ours gets crushed or pay the fine.

also the red die is prity pointless as you can filter it out of buy some stuff on ebay that gets rid of the die for about £1.

There isnt anything that can get rid of the dye, fullers earth was meant to do it, so we tried, and it didnt, it was exactly the same colour, so we tried a charcoal filter and that didnt work either.
Red diesel is only normal diesel with dye added, anyone can buy it, but if you purchase more than 100 litres in one go you are obliged to leave your details.
