Brown Trouser Moment! and a good Samaritan
« on: August 15, 2008, 11:39:17 »
Hi All.

I just thought I'd share a very scary moment that wifey and I have just hadand thank a good Samaritan

We have just been on an expedition to Sainsburys in Peterborough in the good ladies Disco and for no particular reason I decided as I was piloting that we would take the back road home rather than the duel carriageway. On approaching one of the tighter spots on this road at approximately 55mph the ball joint connecting the drop arm to the drag link decided to suffer what i believe is termed a catastrophic failure leaving us with zero response from the helm. Praise the lord that the brakes are in good order and I managed to stop in a straight line avoiding going off the road into the dike albeit amidst much screaming and blue smoke (and that was just the wife  ) I would very much like to thank the Gentleman in the grey one ten who stopped and kindly gave us a lift home (complete with shopping) and then ran me back to our crippled vehicle  to await the RAC. I didn't get your name but if you happen to read this, you have my eternal gratitude and i owe you a large drink.

glad to hear that you're all ok and that the "chocolate ice cream" was the only casualty from the whole incident - at least that's what you told the RAC man it was!

Seriously though,

1) good news no one hurt
2) Aren't fellow Landy owners great

When I left the offroad site at driffield, I suffered a catastrophic loss of drive. The pillock that was driving hadn't put the vehicle in high properly. Whilst stopped  a nice chap in a series LWB stopped to offer assistance which fortunately wasn't needed.

However, on the way home, the radiator decided to blow. As we were waiting for Greeen Flag, the nice chap turned up asking if we I really do believe he would have towed us to Manchester if we had asked.

At this point I would like to say thankyou very much.

Much to my chagrin, I didn't ask his name, I know he comes from the Lancaster area and he has a gorgeous partner

Point is, ask your helper if they are a member of a forum, at least you can thank them properly when you forget to thank them enough like I did

Cheers
John

Hi again,

Thanks for the replies and the kind thoughts that we are both OK. To be honest I think it shook me up more than Sandra, who was unaware of our predicament apart from me almost launching her through the windscreen whilst trying to stop. It was only later that I started to think what could have happened and I don't need to tell you chaps the potential consequences of loosing your steering at speed. At the risk of appearing to tell my grandmother how to suck eggs, might I suggest that everyone keeps an eye on their steering components. Although our Disco only passed its MOT last month with no drama obviously parts can fail without warning. On a lighter note. Does anyone think that I am now paranoid? San had to use the 90 last night to go to work and before she left I found myself laying underneath it shaking track rods and drag links like a man possessed

Better to spend 5 mins looking over your vehicle each day than to not and end up in a ditch somewhere!

I admit i dont do mine that often, every couple of weeks the owner of the HI-Q garage next door to where i work puts it up on the lift at my request and checks everything for me.  Even he moans and says they dont need checking regularly - think i might show him this thread while i am down there this morning using one of his bays to start me engine conversion lol.

Glad your both ok though  :D

I stopped to help a family on the M25 with smoke bellowing out from under their 90 on the way to a wedding,  the smoke was coming from the transfer box and out the vent under the bonnet.  It had been driven at 70mph in difflock!!  But the crossed axle light on the dash wasnt working!!  Thety didnt even know what the diff lock was, it was only a horse box tow car. Hope they got to the wedding OK
