Have you released the drain plug on the diff yet and looked at what has come out?
Have you pulled the half shafts out to examine them yet?

Yep,sounds like the main drive cog in the diff has broken, not unusual.

all my mates say that the crown wheels are the most commen part of the diff to break, but ive never broken one, everytime i "pop a diff"ive always ended up shattering the planet gears, did you also take your prop off? i always take the prop and half shafts out when ive popped mine as it stops the whole thing spinning and making a bigger mess
You can go fast, i can go anywhere!
you can follow me but its going to hurt!!

Some of it can be down to what you are doing at the time.  "Pinning" the rear diff involves fitting a support to the crownwheel alongside the pinion to stop it flexing apart when under load.  When it does flex the tetth are loaded at the ends and far more likely to shatter.
Given that it's more popular amogst comp safari guys IIRC, that would suggest speed is a factor :-k

Also if you bust a diff by spinning a wheel then dropping it on the ground, well the planetary gears are already working hard, so busting them is probably more likely.

Bust maybe it's just down to luck [-o<
