Google Mail, as in your_name@gmail.com.

You can only get gmail accounts by invite.

Gmail is similar to Hotmail in that you use the web to read and send email.

Well google will keep your mails even after you delete them. Make money from your mail, give a copy to the NSA, index is as part of the search process, but only let you see the search results (you hope) and many other lightly documented features.
