VX engine swap?

Hello all,

I'm possibly going to swap an engine on a VX Land Cruiser.

It's just a straight 4.2 deisel swap from a duff VX to a good VX with a duff engine.

Im an engineer and have a decent tool kit, I'll borrow or hire an engine crane.

Any tips etc.

Yes, do they both have the same boxes fitted? AS the back plate might not be the same.

Oh yes, the engines might not be the same if they are not from the same year!!

LC 80 series 1993. 285/75/16s Cooper STTs, OME 850s on the front with 25mm packer, 868s on the rear. 4.88 diffs. Winch bumper with 12000lb winch. Factory lockers. HD rear bumper with wheel carrier and winch mount.

The block of a 1HD-T & 1HD-FT are AFAIK the same (the 1 tells you the bottom end revision, the HD tells you the bottom end 'family', the T and FT describe the top end) so even if you're mixing 12 & 24 valve I doubt that will cause problems. The A440, A442F auto box's and the manual all bolt up the same AFAIK. The only thing I'm not sure about is if the flywheels are different between manual and auto to account for clutch v torque converter mounting.

The only tip I can think of is for getting at the top bell housing to block bolts. You'll need to remove the centre console and gear selector linkages, un-bolt the gearbox cross member and lower the gear box as far as you can, then with a pair of long drive extensions you can get at the top bolts through the selector hole in the transmission tunnel. If the gearbox is staying in then bolt the cross member back up before engine removal  :D

thanks guys,

So if I want to plant a '92 engine in a '94 TLC it might give me some problems?
Just mulling around my options as I've got a very good TLC 4.2 power unit and have the possibilty of getting hold of a top of the range TLC with a blown engine.
Maybe just stick with the mule I've got!
But it does make me think!!

If they're auto's then the 92 will possibly have a 440F and the 94 a 442F. Check if both engines have an extra cable on the injection pump for the gearbox TPS. I'm not 100% sure some of the earliest box's didn't have a need for the TPS but even so you'd just be swapping the cable fixing on the pump I think. Should be a pretty easy job if you've got a nice big engine lift, I believe it's quite a heavy lump  :D
