Engine upgrade.
« on: September 19, 2008, 08:40:42 »
Hi everyone.

Now then got a question for you all.

Im thinking of geting a 300tdi engine block and rebuilding it from scratch.
I want to fit new pistons, uprated cam, bigger turbo, big intercooler, head, manifold the lot then get it all tuned up.
Its all going to get changed for heavy duty stuff or performance parts cos i want as much grunt as possable.
Would it all be worth it?
Your thoughts and ideas on this would be greatfully received.

Thanks for your time.

Rebuild would be worth it for peace of mind, don't think you can get an uprated camshaft tho.
Only real performance upgrades you can do on a 300Tdi are bigger intercooler, uprated turbo and tweak the injection pump to suit.
There is some talk about modifying the waste gate but I think this applies more to 200's rather than 300's although after the bigger intercooler and uprated turbo it would be advisable to fit a boost guage to check you are getting maximum boost at the intake plenum.

If you're going to all that expense what about considering an International 2.8Tdi (the next generation of 300).

There's all kinds of porting can be done, plus water cooled or hybrid turbos, however the most you'll get is about 165-170hp before seriously life-compromising the engine.

As far as I know there's only one UK agent for the engines - MD Engineering near Sleaford.
Website is here http://www.mdengineering.co.uk/
It's not cheap tho

170+ can be achieved quite easily from a 300 without to much work, certinally keeping the standard turbo & running standard boost,

or fit an LS1

Ive got a 200Tdi with full width Alisport intercooler and turbo tweaked. I havnt played with the fuel but im more than happy with mine. Very grunty and better fuel economy too. :)

Sorry to hijack the thread but isn't there a way to up the boost on a 200TDI as well?

Would like to know as I'd like a little bit more power!

not really, it does help the turbo spool up a bit quicker & more responsive but doesnt make much odds to the overal figures
