The National 4x4 response network?

I had a little search for it and found one page about it but the link within the page don't work.

Basically I am now fully legal and consider myself to have a capable enough vehicle to do the job so I would like to sign up when I get myself mended. Now I know there isn't one in Nottingham but in a few weeks we might be moving to a new house in Lincolnshire basically on the Lincs/Skegness border and was wondering if there is one up there?

Does anyone know what would be needed to get involved in regards to qualifications or whatever, any stipulations on licenses (any endorsements, how long you've held it etc)?

The website has been moved to www.4x4response.info - for some reason Google has yet to catch up.

All you need is a road legal vehicle and a suitable license to drive it. Training is provided and will often get you the chance to drive some areas that are usually off limits. Powys 4x4 Response will be running a members only training event next weekend at a top-secret Forestry Commission site, for example.

you need more than just a capable motor, have you seen the list they were sending out of what you had to have,
i dont agree with the fact you gotta pay to be a member when your doing it to help other, i can understand the training been paid for coz you benifit from that.

Not quite. During the recent snow Northants 4X4 Response Team were stationed at Northampton and at Kettering General Hospitals. Basically they made sure all the key personnel could get to work to keep the Hospital running. They also helped ferry blood and medical supplies to outlying centres that were unreachable by conventional transport. I think there were over 100 trips in total over the three days.

It is voluntary, but you need to be covered by insurance, and the organisation obviously has some running costs. However the Northants team are being reimbursed for all their fuel expenses by the Hospitals. Not sure about the motor - I drive a 1963 Land Rover. Most of the kit that was recommended (not insisted upon) I carry in the back anyway (tow rope, first aid kit, shovel etc).

I'm sure if you're 'keen' to help, then reading a page of text isn't really asking too much.  ;)

Broken down, it just means that your vehicle needs to be road legal and would ideally have front and rear recovery points. Inside the vehicle it's advised that you have:

A CB  radio
Mobile phone
Notebook & pencil
Recovery rope & shackles
OS Maps of area
Blanket
Toolkit
Spade/shovel
Torch
First Aid kit (for personal use)
Hi Viz
All stowed securely

The only things I didn't usually carry in my vehicle were maps and a Hi Viz so it was no great shakes.

Don't let it put you off. Over the last couple of weeks here in Herts we've been on standby for a few agencies, and some of the team have been out and assisted various Ambulance Service staff, health visitors etc - not as busy as Northants group though.

The kit I was carrying is what I'd have in the truck in the snowy weather anyway - shovel, blankets, extra clothing for me, flask of coffee, food supplies, plus all the normal recovery gear.

My missus does call it International Rescue  :roll: - but she can see the serious side, and the benefit to the community.

you dont allways have to break the rule's to get banned sometimes it's down to someone not likeing you or noing something about the forum ownew so they do the best to get rid of you

Im just about to start the joining process for COTAG - Morayshire... Who are the only 4x4 response group to be officially recognised by the police.. Subsequently new members need full disclosure and further police checks... then once thats done everyone has a 3 day first aid course then an advance driving course and finally an offroad driving course. I'm in the process of joining the Cambridgeshire team, and I'm just awaiting my Police check to come back so I can complete the paperwork. They don't seem to have an issue with my 4x4 being a Freelander, although they have stated I need to carry a set maps for Norfolk (but I think that's a mistake!).

Hopefully it'll come through soon and I can start being useful.

The Cambs group is a new one, so I'm told, so in need of more members.

im a member of rover rescue in norfolk and this is the list of stuff to have i have most of it and il tell you you know when its all in the back we get calls for the police fire and rescue and st johns and the amblance services most of the time i carry half of it but the rest is at hand in crates we also provide 4x4 support for fun runs and evacuating people from flood areas near the wash as thats were im close to and it a good cause

I think that may be an old statistic - Humber-Yorks 4x4 Response for instance are recognised by 3 different constabularies, North Yorks, Humberside and most recently Lincolnshire (we were last called by the later 2 only last week) and I know many other groups are too by their local constabularies.
