HELP ME MAKE MY MIND UP PLEASE
« on: October 01, 2008, 21:57:46 »
My choice has got to be one of the above please help as i have not got a clue wich one to choose.   8-[  .  THANK YOU FOR YOUR VOTE..

I have been for a test drive today in a 300 discovery it was very nice and i liked it. Then i went for a drive in a pajero exceed, There was no comparison,  the pajero was more comfy, bigger, more extras, faster, smother, no rust or rot, 7 forward facing seats, more bling, and felt a much much more better built car. am i right to choose one of these ? or should i go for the land rover that according to some of you are unreliable rust buckets that break down a lot but the parts are cheap. my mrs wants the pajero and so do the kids. i just want a reliable towing truck to park 6 bums in ??????????????????????

It's probably why the Land Rover is so popular - parts are cheap and easy to fit. And if you're not DIY minded you soon will be. I've always run away from anything to do with brakes but after the main dealer quoted £492 to change two front brake discs and brake pads all round  I found all the parts for £59 and learnt how to do it myself - didn't take that long either, only a two spanner job in the Heynes  :D

Why do people say that Landrovers are unreliable??

As long as you MAINTAIN them you should have no problems. Yes they can suffer from tin rot but it is relatively easy to keep an eye on this. And if you use it off road then any 4X4 will need repairs/maintainence.

How many Landrover products are used day in day out? How many are on the road?? she loads and they are fine.

I'm going to vote for the Rangie with two provisos - if it doesn't have a rust problem and you have enough headroom in it.

Reason is, you can put bigger tyres or a lift on it and still be under 2m tall for car parks. My Disco is only just under 2m with standard tyres, but the RR roof is about 1-2in lower

300tdi but I would also add manaul.

I have an auto. Hated it for towing but with this other engine in, it goes alot better. If you get an auto remove the kick down and that improves the towing 1000000000% in my books. I am getting close to actually saying it is nice to tow with now.

But also, the reasons above, mainly the parts are cheap option. They are silly cheap. Compare the cost between them and for a Paj. I think you will be suprised.

Also 300 as opposed to a 200 is they feel a bit more modern inside and less like a metro.

i went for a drive in a pajero exceed, There was no comparison,  the pajero was more comfy, bigger, more extras, faster, smother, no rust or rot, 7 forward facing seats, more bling, and felt a much much more better built car... my mrs wants the pajero and so do the kids. i just want a reliable towing truck to park 6 bums in

Pajero... every time!  Just keep it well maintained and it'll serve you well!  They're easy to work on and parts are readily available, new or secondhand.  They're superb to drive on the road and very capable off-road.  The build quality is first class and they come with all the toys as standard!

But, then, I may be biased... I currently have three!

and there we have the reliability issue again. The Pajero is indeed an excellent machine, well built and very comfy. But to make it RELIABLE you still need to maintain it!

Too many people expect their vehicle to go on and on without thinking about maintaining it, that way it will not be reliable! This extends to Landrovers, Toyotas, Mitsubishis, Suzukis etc, ignore the maintenance and it will come back to bite you!

Totally agree, crazymac... maintenance is the key!  The trouble is, in these days of rising costs, there are so many people who buy 4x4s and don't maintain them... then sell them on in poor condition.  Sadly, these are the ones about which everyone complains that they're unreliable, etc., when, in fact, they just haven't been looked after or treated well! :(

One point about the Pajero - I know a chap who had one, clipped a tree and bent his steering. £200 to sort out. For £150 or so I can buy a set of heavy duty steering rods, new steering damper, and a Wizardbilt damper relocation kit for my Disco that will solve pretty much any bent steering problems.

One of the problems with the Land Rover market is the availability of sub-standard components.  Too many people buy the cheapest parts available, with these parts often turning out to be exactly that, cheaply made and fail prematurely.

ive had the pajero ( albeit the 2.5 ) yeas it was comfy, but the cost of parts is crippling and mine was hoplessly unreliable, slow, and really heavy on fuel

the 2.8's suffer with fuel pump seals particualy

i now have a 300tsi disco, its faster, way better mpg ( 30mpg ) has actually been verry reliable, cost of parts are very cheap, and the mods you can do are endless :afro:

so its a 300tdi disco for me over a paj everytime

Yep, that quote was for Britpart heavy duty rods (which seem to have a good reputation unlike some of their kit) a de Carbon damper, and the Wizardbilt kit to relocate it. All better than standard!
