Lack of Power and Heavy Fuel usage

   :shock:

Yet again suprise suprise the Disco played up on me doing the L2B run

at the minute the Disco has no power and that the only description i can offer... on the motorway I could barely keep upto 60 and the was with my foot flatter to the floor then ever and keeping in a lower gear to rev the pants of it 

and also at the same time my fuel comsumption has halfed 3/4 tank of diesal just to get to brighton with a top up on the way home  :shock:

does anyone have a idea whats up with the thing this time ?

My first thought would be to check the turbo hoses for any splits, etc.

Ive had a new lift almost a year ago as it was chucking fuel out like a trooper b4 but i could smell the neat diesal then ive not seen any patches of diesal either on the drive or in my space at work??

Turbo Hose ty ill check that too as it does seem to behave as there isnt one... ty for the speedy replys guys :)

When you check the turbo hoses, take them off and check the insides for any delamination that could be blocking the airflow.
Also check the vacuum pipe from the turbo to the diaphram on the injector pump to make sure there are no splits in that, it runs around the back of the engine block.  ;)
One other thing to check (this happend to me), under the exhaust manifold is a threaded arm that connects the exhaust flap to the turbo. The threaded arm is only held onto the exhaust flap by a "C" clip on the underside and this can fall off, so no turbo!!

Well one thing is that if you're driving flat out it will consume a lot of fuel :-k

But also, provided it's still plumbed up as it was when new, any blockage in the air inlet would result in a loss of boost and without boost there would be no extra fuel.  If it's not smoking I'd suspect it's not fuelling is if on boost when it's not on boost, if you follow.

Having driven a TDi with a split hose, your description sounds about right.  Flat as a pancake and difficult to rev, revving it hard without boost might be the reason it's using high fuel, low gears could be the other.

Another, more horrible thought is that the timing has gone out, but I'm told that leads to coloured smoke too, especially on boost.

When i first bought my disco I was struggling to do 60 on the motorway and thought it was just a disco but doing a long motorway journey highlighted the problem.

the next day it chucked out clouds and clouds of white smoke and wouldnt move until the engine was hot and fogged over the town!

I would check the bottom pulley on the crank shaft to make sure the nut hasn't become loose as that is what happened to me and the crank shaft wore away and timing went out and the key way in the pulley was more like a quadroople key way!

Hope you dont have this problem but worth checking.

keith if it is your hoses, there is a chap in Isham that sells a full set for just under £20. I fitted a new set on mine at the weekend, and i was suprised at how flimsy my old ones had become.

I had a similar issue recently after using Veg Oil, and lost all power and speed. That turned out to be my fuel filter. its an easy one to change?

Might be worth changing em over then for £20 and yes m8 done the fuel filter only this month my m8 Frank did it at work for me lol while i was "ahem" working heheheh
