Are 200/300tdi chassis's the same.....
« on: October 13, 2008, 22:34:51 »
As above really, i have a 300tdi, but the chassis is not in very good condition, i have considered doing a swap.... or even getting a chassis, having it blasted and then galvanised.....

Drastic i now.... but worth it if it can be done...

So, where would you source a  chassis..???

Any ideas welcome!
gone from 200tdi.... to 300tdi... still with loads done to it, in fact, even more than the last truck...LOL!!!

No, they are not the same.

The over-chassis crossmember is round on later chassis, the A frame brakcets are then wleded on not bolted as before.  The gearbox crossmember might well be different and the exhaust hangers likewise.

Non of that is insurmaountable though and all the body mounts are the same AFAIK.

The 300 will have ARB mounts and possibly the brakets for the EAS pump/tank and holes for the sensors.

Oh, the fuel tank will be plastic not steel.

In answer to your question from somebody that has done what your asking, the answer is a big yes!!!a 200 chassis will go under a 300 body with no issues, other than engine mounts, the gearbox mounts can be used, iirc 200 disco has never had a steel fuel tank, well ive never seen one anyway, and ive worked on alot of discos, hope this puts your mind at rest  :afro:

All Disco tanks are plastic!

Also, its unusual for a Disco chassis to rot (body work yes! but not chassis!) so why not source a second hand chassis and rebody that? it will definately be cheaper! you will have to use the ID from the replacement chassis though to be legal.

Thanks all...

Richard's chassis's website actually states,.... 'We do not make 88" coil chassis, Range Rover or Discovery yet.'
So that options out, i too was slightly amazed when i realised just how bad this chassis actually is, it's a 98 disco, and the 92 that i just sold had a better if not imaculate chassis, this one has been crushed by my winch bumper bolts, there's a hole near the front hockey stick chassis mount, in the main rails, and another near the rear shock mount, same side, i'm a bit pee'd off to be honest, this truck now owes me roughly 9k, and when i bought it, i thought it was really good, now i know why the guy sold it!!

The using an older chassis idea might work, it'd ideally already be a 300 one, identity i don;t care about, (is there actually a number ON the chassis???)

Thanks for the ideas.....

The one thing thats putting me off, is that i don;t have a 4 or 2 post lift..... which i suspect is critical when re-chassising a disco..... unlike a defender....

Designa DO actually do a chassis for a range rover, http://www.designa-chassis.co.uk/rangerover.asp so the next question is, is the range rover and discovery chassis the same..???? ie, if i ordered a 300tdi manual range rover chassis, would the disco bits just bolt on etc......

Any idea what the chassis condition is like... thanks for the offer, but it'd need to be a good one, as there's no point in doing it only to get another rough chassis.....

Thanks!

Now had email from Designa..... they don;t do a disco chassis, so, looks like the olnly real option is to find a really good 2nd hand one, blast, see whats left, and have galved if it's worth it.....

Thanks Mick,..... that may well be an option.........

I'm in no real huge rush though, i can patch the chassis at the moment, but would like to do a proper job at some point.....

I might even ask you how much to prep a chassi and do the swap for me.... as i don;t have a 2 post lift, which i suspect is pretty much essential for the job....LOL

A bit off the original subject but I was surprised to see a very rusty 300 Disco chassis the other day. It was a P-Reg 300TDI, the rear cross member was holed under the plastic trim between the bumper and the rear floor. The cross member next to the tow bar mounting bolts was very rusty and both rear body mounts were not attached to the floor. The owner swapped this for his rotten K-Reg 200TDI, mostly front end of sills I believe. He is not very happy and thinks he may go to the ministry as it has an MOT for 9 months.  [-X
