2nd battery placement and air intake?
« on: October 14, 2008, 08:01:50 »
Hello All.

went out this morning and battery on 300TDi disco was lazy so had to jump start.

Thinking of fitting a second battery where the wheel jack goes, but how do you organise the air intake on the filter box?  it is in the way, any photo's and advice appreciated.

Regards

Jon

Fit a safari snorkel and that goes in the side of the box, the original hoel being sealed up.

Or botch it with a home made B&Q snorkel!

I've just taken some pics of my Mantec/DIY snorkel and second battery set-up.

Once I get them on the web I'll link them as I keep getting told off for posting full size photos on here.......

Right then, I've put some links below, but essentially I did this:

Removed old 90 degree angle intake pipe from inner wing.  Blocked old intake hole with a spray paint can lid (honest!) held in with mastic.  Fitted the steel pipe section of a Mantec snorkel to the wing.  Took a length of corrugated rubber hose and joined it to the air box using a jointing section from the wing intake of a TD5 Defender.  Slapped mastic over the whole lot and hey presto - Mantec/DIY snorkel.  I then utilised the space in front of the air box to fit the second battery and wired it up to a second alternator where the air-con pump would be on top of the timing cover.  Job done.

Pics are here:

joint piece into air box
new hole in inner wing for flexi-pipe
front of air box and second battery
Mantec snorkel pipe

Next job is to trim off the unused portion of the old inlet  on the air-box and plate it over with an ally/placcy sheet.  This will give me more room and allow a bigger battery to be fitted or I could use the space to mount the auxillary fuse box (between the battery and inner wing in the pics above) a bit more solidly as its just wedged in at present...........

Hope that helps,

Bri

Before I could affors a snorkel, I fitted an aux. battery on my 300Tdi.  I had the same problem with the air intake.

All I did was blank off the original hole with a painttin lid, make a hole in the side of the airbox - same size as the original - and screwed the standard right-angled pipe that used to go into the wing over the new hole.

Ben.
