Unusual tyre question

Hi guys - not the usual tyre size question for you - instead of the biggest tyre to fit a defender, I need to know the smallest...

Will something like 195x50R16 fit onto say a disco steel rim? I need to lose about 10cm of height to fit a 90 in to my garage (if I can ever afford to get one!) so am thinking about a set of rims with any old car tyre on which will allow me to get the 90 in and out of the garage and then I can change over to a proper set of wheels/tyres before heading off onto the public highway.

Seems a lot of messing, just to get your LR in the garage.
Just think of all the time you're going to waste everytime you get it out, changing tyres/wheels, etc :huh:

Have you yet to afford a garage or defender, if its a garage, then build a bigger garage! if its a defender, then work on it outside and use the garge for drinking tea in and storing crap, thats what 90% of us do!

LOL - thanks for the replies guys. Have the garage already - unfortunately it's part of a row of garages and can't really be modded! S'pose I could fit a different style of door to gain an extra couple of inches of head room.

I was lucky/unlucky

When we moved into 'BTM Towers' the previous occupant had sold off the bottom 150 foot of garden as a building plot.
This meant that we lost a 30foot long garage, & double car-port :evil:

However they weren't high enough to get my (at the time) Discovery underneath.

So having had a garage built, I now have a double (with electric roller-door), with a minimum headroom of 8'6! :D

So, now I can get the 110 up on axle-stands, if need be, or even a longed for 101FC would easily fit in.

That's just showing off Richard!   :D

Rest assured that when my lotto numbers finally come up my new house will have a fantastic garage block to house my fleet of land rover products and assorted other cars...  :twisted:

Oh I'd have liked a brick-built garage instead, but we'd already spent money on the windows, releading the stained glass, & carpets, so a sectional one would have suffice.

When we move though, I want one of those gorgeous Oak ones!

At a push you could stand a LR on bare rims, so any old 16" sports car tyre would fit if it were wide enough for the rim.  Better still if you can get some 15" steel rims, they will fit because the metal is thinner than on an alloy so they clear the calliper (just).

You will have fun using one jack to swap between the 2 setsa though ;)

Couldn't you just let the tyres down the pump them back up after? It is alot of work though,  Ben

Yeah, s'pose I could but wouldn't be very good for they tyres I guess - either way is going to be hard work. Maybe it's time for the missus to sell her sports car and have the sensible car so I can get a landy again...  :-k

cal a mate of mine had the same problem he just dug his floor out to what he thought would be ok not forgetting your footings should be a few feet

Was chatting with a mate about it - he suggested the same, or maybe even raise the roof a bit. I had better try and stop thinking about it until I've actually got some money to make it more like a reality!  :D
